61 - TV Brings Down Garaway 54-45 (12-21-60)
PHOTO: The Tuscarawas Valley Trojan Warriors: Tuscarawas Valley, without a player over 6-foot tall in its starting lineup, parlayed aggressive offense-defense play into one of the top "mighty mite" combinations in the county this season. Playing key roles have been these players: KNEELING - Rod Crooper (left), Jim Studer and Coach Robert Heller. STANDING - Chuck Ferron (left), Ron Lake, Bill Huth, Al Cerett and Mike Wideder.
SUGARCREEK - Anything can happen and usually does when 2 Tuscarawas County Class "A" quintets get together. That's been proven several times this season already and last night here that fact was very much in evidence again when Tuscarawas Valley (3-1) upended Garaway (7-2) 54-45 in a non-league contest. It marked the first time since the 1958-1959 Tuscarawas County Class "A" Tournament Garaway has been defeated by another combine from this county, and Tuscarawas Valley was the last team to turn the trick, defeating the Pirates 57-54. Going into the game Garaway had conquered county quintets 21 straight times. The streak included victories of 77-68 and 73-60 over the Trojans in regular season warfare and a 62-60 triumph in the County Class "A" Tournaments finals last season. Speculation has been this year's county league race would be a wide open affair. The Trojan victory seems to bare that out.
Tusky Valley can attribute a sharp eye from the foul line for the victory. It meshed 24 of 39 free tosses, while dueling the Bucs to a 15-15 deadlock from the field. Three pirates fouled out of the contest. Bill Yakley was the first to go with 5 minutes remaining in the game. Tom Andreas suffered his fifth personal with 3 minutes to go and Jarret Gray at the one minute mark. The hotly-contested duel was not decided until late in the final period when the Trojans, with Mike Widder leading the way, pulled into the front runner's spot for keeps. At the quarter marks it was Garaway 13-12, 24-24 and Tusky Valley 38-35. Widder came through with one of the highest scoring performances of his high school career when he tallied 23 points. Jim Studer and Ron Lake connected for 13 apiece. Bob Raber led Garaway with 13 and Andreas added 10. Garaway took 56 shots from the field for 26.7 percent and TV fired 51 to end with a 29.4 percent mark. The Garaway Reserves (3-3) had the Tuscarawas Valley Reserves (0-4) walk the plank 36-25.
