STONE CREEK - Offense and 2 of the most outstanding cagers in the Tuscarawas County Class "A" League held the spotlight in theStone Creek-Port Washington game. The Purple Riders (2-4) (7-7) came up with one of the highest number of points scored by any county team this season. And the scoring duel between Gale Sauser of the Panthers (1-6) (5-12) and Jim Bender of the Purple Riders, was without question the most heated of the campaign. Sauser won the duel scoring 40 points only two points shy of the school record set by Jim Lorenz in 1954. But Bender was close behind with 36. The former is the No. 1 scorer in overall County Class "A" points and No. 2 in the league race. Bender holds the top spot in the league and 2nd in county total. The game was one of many fouls, with the Panthers being tagged with 24, resulting in Dale Lehman leaving in the third period, and Larry Stephon and Jim Billman in the fourth quarter. Port was called for 23 personals. In addition to Bender, Bill Phillips and Jim Hannahs absorbed fifth personals in the final quarter. Stone Creek meshed 23 of 33 free throws and Port 32 of 45, while the Panthers made 25 of 66 fielders for 43 percent and the Riders 30 of 64 for 46 percent. Tony Nigro took a great deal of pressureoff Bender by scoring 24 points. Phillips connected for 17. Stephon tallied 14 and Lehman 11 for the Panthers. Stone Creek was a winner in the first two contests. In the Junior High game, Stone Creek edged Port 43-29 and in the Reserve game, Stone Creek (3-13) downed Port Washington (4-7) 47-41.
