Charles McPherson was tabbed the key in Baltic's victory over Port Washington (0-1) (2-3). On the sick list for the past 2 weeks, the lanky center returned to school only yesterday and because of that reason Eagle Coach Jon Hall was reluctant to use him. But, McPherson came off the bench in the second half to spark the Eagles (1-0) (4-3) with his play on the backboards, snaring 18 rebounds and scoring 12 points. Meanwhile, Jim Bender of the Riders was having himself a scoring picnic. The veteran all-county performer tallied only 6 points in the first half, but could not be stopped in the second portion of the game when he increased his total for the night to 31. Hall called the win a team victory and it's easily justified. Larry Lautenschleger collected 19 points to lead the way, while Ted Oswald and Gary Mast connected for 14 apiece and Dick Gerber 9. Their fine shooting resulted in the best night of the season for Baltic. It fired in 33 of 65 shots from the field for slightly over 50 percent. It made 6 of 14 foul shots and Port Washington fired 12 of 17 foul attempts. Baltic, maintained the lead throughout the game, going on top 19-11 at the end of the first period before Port cut the margin to 28-26 at halftime. The Eagles held a narrow 46-45 lead going into the final period where they let loose with a basket barrage that brought in 12 goals in 16 tries. Baltic led by as high as 12 points in the final stanza, but was hurt by bad passes, and the hot-shooting of Bender. Port Washington also exhibited balanced firing power with Gary Gay tacking on 11 points and Jim Hannahs and Bill Phillips adding 10 apiece. The Baltic Reserves (4-2) beat back the Port Washington Reserves (1-2) 43-35. The Baltic Junior High (1-0) also won their game over Port Washington Junior High (0-2) 28-25.
