61 - Newcomerstown Loses 44th Straight 70-52 To Tusky (11-30-60)
NEWCOMERSTOWN - A neatly balanced scoring punch enabled Tuscarawas (2-0) to stave off a third-quarter rally by a determined Newcomerstown (0-1) and give the Broncos a win last night. Originally scheduled Saturday, the game was a close battle for 3 quarters before the balanced scoring of Tusky paid dividends. The Trojans trailed only 46-40 going into the final stanza, but the Broncos took full advantage of the aggressive play of the hosts at the foul line to outscore them 24-12 and waltz home. Paul Cerana led the victors with 22 points, while Vic Vesco chimed in with 14. Phil Meese canned 13 and Duff Summers potted 12. Skip Smith, one of only 2 returning lettermen, led the Trojans of Coach Jim Shamel with 17 points and Bill Fisher and John Best added nine each. The game opened the season for Newcomerstown which has gone winless on the hardwood since the 1958-1959 season and 44 games. The Tusky Reserves (1-0) had no trouble from the Newcomerstown Reserves (0-1) as Tusky won 41-22.
