61 - Newcomerstown Gets Revenge 60-55 At Stone Creek (2-4-61)

STONE CREEK - Newcomerstown (3-12) avenged a previous 67-65 setback last night when it defeated Stone Creek (5-15). Newcomerstown moved to a 16-9 lead at the end of the first quarter, and by controlling the back boards increased it to 31-21 at halftime and 45-34 at the end of the third quarter. Stone Creek couldn't match the Trojans on the boards, particularly since ace rebounder Larry Stephon is still on the sidelines with a badly sprained ankle. Stephon won't be in the lineup against Gnadenhutten next week when the Panthers return to County Class "A" League action for their season finale. However, he may be ready for the upcoming county tournaments. A torrid shooting job by Gale Sasuser which netted 33 points, did not help the Panthers much. He was the only one to score in double figures. Newcomerstown was led by Ernie Art's 18 points. Bill Fisher, Sam Williams and Gary Gunn tallied 11 each. The Trojans made 27 of 72 field attempts for 37 percent and hit on 6 of 14 free throws, while Stone Creek connected 16 times in 43 goal tries for 37 percent and meshed 23 of 31 from the foul line. The night started off with the Junior High game between Stone Creek and Dundee with Stone Creek stopping Dundee 31-29. Next up was the Reserve game where Stone Creek (5-13) was again the winner and again by the same score 31-29 over Newcomerstown.
