61 - Gnaden The Giant Killer Stops Midvale 67-65 (12-14-60)

MIDVALE - One half of the exciting pattern designed by Gnadenhutten (2-3) and Midvale (5-1) basketball teams has been completed.  It came last night before a jam-packed audience at Midvale as the Gnadenhutten Indians took to the warpath  and upending the Devils for their first defeat.  The other portion may come February 3 when the pair meet again at Gnadenhutten.  In the past 2 campaigns the schools have split in regular season.  Midvale appeared to have things under partial control  after a nip and tuck first half, moving from a 26-26 halftime deadlock to a 44-39 lead at the end of the third stanza.  But the Indians rose to the occasion and went in  front at 62-60 with 5 seconds left.  Laying off the Devils for fear,  of fouling at this stage, Gnaden allowed Warren (Corky) Leggett clear sailing and he drove in for a layup that knotted the count resulting in the overtime.  Gnaden again went into the lead and was on top 67-64 with about 5 seconds left in the extra period.  The Devils  made a foul shot and missed the second try with Gnaden taking  possession and running out the clock.  Gnadenhutten had just come off a 3-game losing streak before the upset.  Both teams fashioned balanced scoring attacks.  Gnaden came up with a surprise high scorer in  Bob Ervin, a 6-0 Junior who tallied 21 points after mustering only 26 in the previous 4 outings.  Ray Rank hit for 16, Bill Blickersderfer 12 and Dave Struchen 10.  Leggett paced the Devils with 20 points.  Neal Beans canned 17 and Mike Page 13.  Each team had 26 field goals, but Gnaden fared better at the free throw line with 15 successes in 23 attempts, while Midvale netted 13 of 22 free shots.  The (4-1) Gnadenhutten Reserves found themselves in a "sudden death" 47-45 loss to the Midvale Reserves (4-2).  It was also Gnaden's first loss of their season.
