GNADENHUTTEN - A drive-in by Bob Ervin with 2:16 left to play gave the Gnadenhutten Indians (1-0) their first lead of the game and led to a spectacular comeback victory over the Port Washington Purple Riders (0-1).  With both clubs in their initial starts of the campaign before a capacity crowd at the Gnaden Gym, it marked an exciting debut for both.  In the first period, the charges of Dick King opened up a 7-0 lead before the host club of first year Coach Ron Sakola drew the first points.  In the second period with Jim Bender, Bill Phillips and Gary Gay connecting on timely shots, Port opened a 20 point gap by halftime.  It appeared the three year reign of the Tribe was over, but the Indians came back to narrow the count by five points, 44-39 at the end of the third.  Ervin's drive was off the fast break and his fielder gave his club a 54-53 lead.  At 1:30 Ray Rank gave Gnaden it's first "wide" margin as he sunk a goal to make it 56-53.  With Jim Hannahs and Jim Bender both at the line with one and one's, Port had the chance to put the Riders in the lead once again.  Bender made the first of his, but missed the second and Hannahs missed.  Ervin added the finishing touches when he was fouled with three second left, going to the line and shooting one free shot which dropped through.  Bender, along with Phillips led Port with 16 points, while Gary Gay hit for 13 markers.  Rank led all scorers whenhe came in with 20 markers and Carl Dichler's timely shooting  in the second half gave him 13 points and Ervin hit  for 11.  The Port Washington Reserves (0-1) also dropped their game against the Gnadenhutten Reserves (1-0) 38-23.  The Port Washington Junior High (0-1) team started the sweep by Gnaden by losing to Gnadenhutten Junior High 34-28.
