PORT WASHINGTON - Port Washington High School inaugurated its new gymnasium on a triumphant note Saturday with a 71-48 romp over Stone Creek (0-5) (loser of its last 27 basketball starts) before a fine turnout. Firing hot from the foul line, the Purple Riders (3-3) potted 13 of 17 free flings, while Stone Creek made only 14 of 29 chances. Rider coach Dick King commended Jim Hannahs and Tony Nigro for their hustling play on the boards, while also pointing to the team's overall defensive play for its success. Bill Phillips, one of 3 Port players in double figures, took scoring honors with 23 points, while Jim Bender contributed 17 and Nigro 11. Larry Stephon led Stone Creek with 18 and Gale Sauser hit for 17. The Port Washington Reserves (2-2) won their first game on the new floor by roping the Stone Creek Reserves (0-5) 37-25.

FROM KAREN QUILLIN'S "QUILL-LINES - UNCAGED ENERGY - Port Washington may have the makings of a second Elvis presley as far as wiggling is concerned. I attended the Stone Creek-Port Washington game Saturday night inPort's new gym. On one side of the gym are bleachers and the other side a stage, where most of their students are seated. During halftime they played records and one recording happened to be quite snappy. A boy about 9, who was on the stage with friends, stood up in fron of everyone and danced a jig to the tune. He didn't exactly bring down the house, or school, but he did get a good round of applause from the spectators.
