61 - Garaway Loses To Hiland Again! 35-33 (11-30-60)

SUGARCREEK - Garaway (3-1) and Hiland (2-0), churned down basketball lane here last night in form typical of some of the classic battles they have staged.  This renewal went to the Hawks, who sank a basket with less than a minute remaining to play to chalk up the victory.  And, you couldn't blame Pirate fans if they were a little touchie at the mention of Hiland today.  Last night's defeat represented only their third in their last 28 games, but as fate or a Hollywood script writer would have written it - all the losses have come at the hands of the same school - Hiland.  Last season Garaway lost ony 2 games in 24 starts, one in the regular season to Hiland and the second time to the same team in the District Class A finals at Brilliant.  Garaway maintained leads at all quarter stops, holding the front runner's spot 10-2 at the end of the first period 20-14 at halftime and 28-21 at the end of the third period in the low-scoring contest.  However, with less than a minute to play the Hawks came up with the crucial shot of the game to climax an uphill drive.  The Hawks used a pressing defense that was highly effective against Garaway in the stretch maneuver.  Garaway took only 40 shots from the field and made 11 for 27.5 percent, its worst night of the young season.  These same 2 teams collided in the District finals last year at Brilliant and the Hawks won, gaining a berth in the Canton regional tournament.  Only 2 players gained double figures in the game, one for each squad.  Art Mullet tallied 13 points for the Hawks and Bob Raber connected for 14 for the Pirates.  No Reserve game reported.
