MALVERN - Sparked by the one-two punch of Seniors Jim Bender and Bill Phillips, Port Washington's Purple Riders (1-1) found the winning combination Saturday as they throttled Malvern.  As the duo personally outscored the hosts, Port broke into the win column for the first time after dropping its opener in a close game to Gnadenhutten (1-0) 57-54 early last week.  Bender fired 29 points in the victory, while Phillips hit for 18.  The Riders had a slow start and trailed 22-20 at the half.  Moving ahead 38-28 at the end of 3, Port caught fire in the final stanza, canning 31 points to Malvern's 9 for the lopsided win.  Port hit 40 percent from the field on 29 of 73 attempts with both Phillips and Bender hitting 52 percent from action.  Tony Nigro led on the boards with 20 rebounds, Jerry Hannahs had 14 and Gary Gay 13 for superior play in  this department.  Port's game with Keene, originally set for the new gymnasium at Port, will be played at Keene Tuesday siknce the Riders' gym is not yet complete.  In all probability Port's next home game with Stone Creek December 10 will be held in the new arena.  The Reserve game was not reported by The Daily Reporter.
