61 - Baltic Seeks 4th Triumph Tonight In Debut (12-9-60)

Baltic High School has had 4 coaches in the past 4 years, including present mentor Jon Hall, who succeeded last year's tutor Jim Weinsz.  Hall has seen his charges break even at 3-3 in 6 games played thus far.  Tonight the Eagles have their shooting eyes set on coming up with No. 7, an  important Tuscarawas County Class "A" League contest with Port Washington at Baltic.  Hall has molded his 1960-1961 aggregation around 3 returning veterans in Gary Mast, Larry Lautenschleger and Charles McPherson.Recently he gathered with his top 7 players.  McPherson was absent from the picture-taking session.  Kneeling with the Baltic Coach are Jack Miller (left) and Dick Gerber.  STANDING - Gary Mast, Larry Lautenschleger, Ted Oswald and Ken Stein.  For the first time in 4 seasons the familiar names of John Rice and Gary Gerber aren't on the Eagle roster.  Both were perenially among the top scorers in the county.  Rice tallied 360 points last season and was named to the Daily Reporter's All-County squad.  Gerber, a member of the Daily Reporter Team in 1959, gained the coach's all-county team last season.

Players of such ability are neither easily forgotten or replaced.  But Lautenschleger, a Senior, has already taken giant steps toward gaining a niche in the hallowed Eagle basketball history.  He has scored 121 points, an average of 20 per game.  Mast is runner-up on the team totals with 75 and McPherson, who missed the last game due to influenza, has scored 75.  McPherson is the big man on the squad at 6-3.  Sophmores Oswald and Gerber round out the starting 5, while the others pictured have seen first-lihne substitute duty.  In their 6 games the Eagles have outscored the opposition 381-370, averaging 65.5 points a game and the foes 65 a game.  Wins have been 72-65 over Stone Creek 70-55 over Fresno and 81-60 over Roscoe.  Losses were 58-41 to Garaway, 65-54 to Adamsville and 67-63 to Conesville.
