Battle Of The Unbeaten As Strasburg And Garaway Square-Off

DOVER - It's the last battle of unbeatens in Tuscarawas County this season,  but not the 1st time Garaway has entered a county league match with Strasburg carrying an unscathed loop record.  The 2 teams clash Friday night in the feature attraction of a 3-game Class A League schedule.  Host Strasburg is 9-0 and Garaway is 8-0, while both squads sport 2-0 loop marks.  Other games find Tuscarawas (0-1) (3-4) at Gnadenhutten (0-1) (3-5) and Tuscarawas Valley (0-2) (2-4) at Port Washington (0-2) (4-4).  Midvale (6-3) is tied for the league leadership at 2-0 with Garaway and Strasburg and will take-on the Green Hornets (2-5) at Malvern.

Garaway probably hasn't forgotten, but others may have that in the past 2 seasons the Pirates have lost a pair of league games to the Tigers by a total of 3 points.  This is the 3rd consectuve campaign that the Bucs enter the Strasburg game with a perfect loop record.  In the 1964-65 campaign Garaway was 4-0,  but suffered its 1st loss when it was nipped 71-69 by the Bengals.  Last season the Bucs had another 4-0 mark and their game with the Tigers was every bit as close as the previous season, but the Pirates bowed 51-50.  That's about what fans attending the Tiger-Pirate battle can expect to see.  If anything, it'll be an interesting contrast of 2 nearly completely different teams.

Strasburg boasts height, experience and depth.  Garaway, on the other hand, is young (4 of the first 6 players are underclassmen), inexperienced (with the exception of the first 8 games) and its bench can't begin to match the talent Charlie Huggins has at Strasburg.  Leading the all-veteran Tiger lineup will be 6-3 Senior All-Ohioan John Studer, who has pumped in 226 points and is closing in on the school record of 1117.  Charlie Jones, a 6-2 Senior who is paired with Studer at forwards, has fired in 155 points for the Bengals, while another Senior, 6-2 pivot man Ed Yackey, has 94.  Rounding out Huggins' probable starting lineup will be 6-1 Junior Ed Rusk, who  has 96 markers and 5-8 Senior Mike Rieger.  The latter has tallied only 31 points, but in his role as the team quarterback and playmaker has helped the other 4 starters click.

Gene Bayer, a 6-3 Senior, will see plenty of action and can be counted on as a scorer, having tallied 65 points, including 18 against Hiland last week.  Also probable to play are Juniors, 6-1 Ron and 6-3 Tom Hall, 5-10 Senior Gary Phillips and 5-11 Sophomore Art (Butch) Haswell.  Errol Miller, a 5-11 Junior, will lead Garaway into the game.  He has 121 points and is the team's top in that category.  Don Richardson, the Pirates' lone returning letterman and scorer of 103 points, will receive a starting nod.  He is 6 foot and along with 5-5 guard Rich Richardson, the only Seniors on the squad.  Starting at pivot will be 6-1 Sophomore Kim Sedwick, who has 88 points.  Mike Gerber, a 5-5 Sophomore and tabbed the team's motor by Head Coach Glenn Bower, will pair with Rich Richardson at guards.  Tim Miller, a 5-10 Sophomore, has hit 70 points and will see considerable action.
