67 - Port Washington Puts Down Midvale 48-47 (1-21-67)

PORT WASHINGTON - Greg Bender's foul shot with 17 seconds remaining to play was the victory margin Saturday night when Port Washington (8-5) nipped Midvale (9-6) in a non-league game.  The Purple Riders trailed throughout the game until 3 minutes left in the game when it knotted the count 42-42.  Midvale regained the lead 44-42, Port tied it at 44-44, the Blue Devils went on top 46-44 and Jim Hagan's fielder deadlocked the count at 46-46.  Blue Devil Lee Eberly then sank a charity toss to provide the invaders a 47-46 margin, setting the stage for Bender's heroics.  Each team had scoring opportunities afterwards, but neither could connect.  The Port triumph avenged an earlier setback of 81-56 at the hands of Midvale in a league game.

Jerry Stephens led the Riders' attack on 17 points and Bender followed with 14.  Bob Carlisle's 21 topped Midvale.  Jeff Huston grabbed 10 of Port Washington's 24 rebounds and Carlisle had 10 of Midvale's 21.  Port Washington, which observes homecoming Friday night when it entertains Gnadenhutten in a Tuscarawas County Class A League encounter, hit 19 of 47 field goal tries for 40 percent and 10 of 12 charity tosses.  Midvale, which plays Tuscarawas Friday in a league game,  made 20 of 48 from the floor for 42 percent and 7 of 10 foul shots.

The Port Washington Reserves (5-8) clipped the Midvale Reserves (8-7) 31-28 for a rare sweep of Midvale.
