67 - Port Washington In Comeback Against Newcomerstown 62-57 (1-13-67)










PORT WASHINGTON - Port Washington Purple Riders (7-4) made a superb comeback last night and in the process, scored a slick decision over the Newcomerstown Trojans (2-9).  After trailing 21-10 after the 1st stop, the Purple Riders defense limited the Trojans to a mere 8 points, while cutting Newcomerstown's halftime lead to 29-24.  Port finally tied the Trojans with time running out in the 3rd period, 40-40, but couldn't find the handle for the lead, as Newcomerstown pocketed 2 more baskets.  Midway in the final stanza, Port managed to tie it up again at 52-all.  With 2:30 to go, Jerry Stephens, Port's leading scorer with 21, stole the ball twice, which resulted in a pair of buckets.  Jim Hagan supported Stephen's output with 15 points.  Ron Hurst led the Trojans with 15 markers.  He was followed by Bill Ripley with 12, Ernie Triplett 11 and Jeff Schmidt 10.  Newcomerstown led the Riders in rebounds 32-30.  Hurst grabbed 10 for the Trojans, while Jeff Huston had 13 for the victors.  Port was guilty of 18 turnovers, while Newcomerstown showed 17.

The Port Washington Reserves (4-7) picked up win number 4 beating back the Newcomerstown Reserves 25-20.
