67 - Port Washington Pins 60-51 Loss On Tuscarawas (12-9-66)

PORT WASHINGTON - The name of the game was charity, but for the Tuscarawas Broncos (3-2) it was  defeat, as the continuous march to the foul lines by the Port Washington Purple Riders (3-2) cost the Broncos their 2nd straight loss.  The Riders took full advantage of 25 personals, connecting on 26 of 38 free throws to garner the win as Tusky led in field goals 21-17.  Bill Goshorn and Butch Reed were not in action in the final seconds, having picked up their 5th personals late in the contest.  Also in danger of making an early trip to the showers were Brent Lehigh and John Bihari, who ended with 4 personals.  To add to their misfortunes, the Broncos were unable to penetrate a light defense put up by the smaller Riders.

The victors jumped to a quick 7-1 lead with 6:49 remaining in the 1st quarter and built the margin to 17-10 at the end of the 1st stop.  The 2nd frame was the only one in which the Broncos were able to muster any offensive punch as they gained their only 2 leads of the night.  It was Lehigh who put the Broncos into the lead on both occasions, hitting on a jumper from the key with 2:44 to go in the half and seconds later, following a Rider goal, the Broncos were in the driver's seat for the final time at 25-24.

The 3rd stanza saw the Rider's drive for the victory materalize as they outscored the visitors 14-4 to take a commanding 45-34 lead into the final going.  The Riders extended their lead in the final frame to 13 points on 4 separate occasions as foul trouble prevented the Broncos from pressing.  The game took on a football atmosphere in the final minutes as the scramble for the ball was vicious.  Sharing scoring honors were Rider Greg Bender and John Bihari of Tuscarawas.  Each collected 19 markers.  Jim Hagan added 17 and Tim Page 12 for the victors.  Lehigh was held below his 20-point plus average for the 2nd straight time, hitting only 11.  Fred Rausch added 9 to the Tuscarawas total.  Tracy Knisley and Lehigh led the Broncos in rebounds, each grabbing 10 as the losers led in that department.  Jeff Huston snarled 11 rebounds to lead the locals with Hagan and Page countering with 7.  From the field the Riders hit on 17 of 58 action shots for 29.3 percent and Tusky 21 of 68 for 30.8 percent.  From the foul line, the Broncos made 9 of 15.

Purple Riders Head Coach Joe Lopez was pleased with his team's performance, pointing out that the 10 fouls called against his squad accounted for the win as they had run into serious foul trouble all year.  Both teams will carry identical records when they resume action tonight, PortWashington traveling to Gnaden and Tusky treking to Scio.

The Tuscarawas Reserves (4-1) nipped the Port Washington Reserves (2-3) 29-26 in a nip and tuck game.
