67 - Gnaden Blasts Newcomerstown 71-58 (12-17-66)
GNADENHUTTEN - Newcomerstown (1-5), after battling Gnaden (2-2) on even terms during the 1st quarter, could manage only 3 during the opening 5 minutes of the 2nd period, while the Indians turned on the heat and went on to score a 13-point victory Saturday night. Both teams are in action this week with the Trojans hosting Dennison St. Mary Thursday night and the Indians traveling to Garaway Friday for a county league game. Rebounding played a big role in the Trojan-Tribe game with Gnadenhutten grabbing 29, 13 of them by Bill Kohl and Newcomerstown 18, 5 by Jeff Schmidt.
After the cold 2nd quarter, during which Gnadenhutten moved to a 37-23 lead and a so-so 3rd stanza that ended with the Indians ahead 56-36, the Trojans matched the Tribe bucket for bucket. Dan Jinks and Kohl combined for more than half of Gnaden's point total, hitting 27 and 24, respectively. Ernie Triplet with 15, while Ron Hurst and Schmidt made 10 apiece. Gnaden connected 27 times in 56 floor attempts for 40 percent and Newcomerstown on 23 of 64 for 36 percent.
The Gnadenhutten Reserves (1-2*) appears to have won their 1st game of the season as they got by the Newcomerstown Reserves 36-30. *One Gnaden reserve game was not reported earlier.
