67 - Strasburg Remains Unbeaten With 63-46 Win Against Garaway (1-6-67)
Strasburg's Ed Yackey (50) appears to get a big boot out of the game of basketball. Yackey, also an All-Star football player looks as though he may have just tried for a field goal...grid style. Defending for Garaway is Kim Sedwick.
Gene Bayer of Strasburg pulls down a rebound despite the efforts of Garaway defenders, Mike Gerber (21) and Errol Miller (45).
STRASBURG - The Strasburg Tigers (3-0) (10-0) extended their win streak to 10 games and John Studer broke the school's scoring record here last night. But, the Garaway Pirates (2-1) (8-1), displaying desire and hustle, stole the show; although, bowing in a battle of Tuscarawas County unbeatens. The youthful Pirates, outmanned, but loaded with a desire to hold the Tigers down, kept within striking distance until late in the contest and won the respect of over 1300 fans. But, respect doesn't count record-wise and the Pirates of Head Coach Glenn Bower will carry a fine mark against Tuscarawas Valley (2-5) tonight.
John Studer broke the school scoring record of 1117 recorded by John Peters in the 1963-64 season with about 3 minutes remaining in the 1st half and ended with a total of 22 markers to lead all scorers. His new record is now 1131 points with 8 more games to go plus tourney action will add to his total.
Following the game, Bower had this to say: "I give our boys a lot of credit, as our young ball club played just as good as Strasburg's. Our offensive rebounding definitely hurt us. I don't want to take anything away from the Tigers. They are a good ball club". Strasburg mentor Charley Huggins also praised the Pirates, saying "Bower did a good job with his boys. I don't think we played as good as we were capable".
The hosts jumped to a 15-6 lead at the end of the 1st stop, a 3-point play by Ed Yackey with 7:03 to go in the quarter gave the Bengals a lead they never relinquished. But the Pirates weren't about to die easily, narrowing the count to 6 points 2 times in the 2nd frame before 2 quick baskets by the Tigers gave them a 33-21 halftime lead. In the 1st half the Pirates were guilty of 8 turnovers, hindering chances on several occasions to draw even with the unbeaten Tigers. A brief Garaway rally in the 3rd stanza saw a 13-point Tiger lead shrink to 6 points, but from the 2:44 mark in the period to the end of the quarter, the Tigers, using poise and their height advantage to good use, took a 47-35 lead into the final frame. The final quarter was fairly even, as the Bucs were able to keep within 10 and 12 points until the final 2 minutes, when Strasburg was able to extend their lead.
Two Pirates left the game in the late stages via the foul route, leading scorer and play-maker Don Richardson bowing out of action with 2:53 to go and Errol Miller, the only other visitor to hit double figures, fouling out in the last minute. The contest was a slowed-up affair, as neither squad could break loose from sticky presses employed. Strasburg dominated the defensive boards, limiting the Pirates to but 4 offensive rebounds in taking a 35-20 edge in that department. Studer led the victors with 9 rebounds, while 5-5 Rich Richardson led the way for Garaway with 7. Yackey and Gene Bayer were the only other Tigers to hit double figures, each collecting 12 points. Meanwhile, Don Richardson had 13 for the losers and Errol Miller 10.
The Tigers had a total of 12 turnovers, with Garaway guilty of 10, only 2 in the 2nd half of play. From the floor, Strasburg hit on only 25 of 76 action shots for 32.9 percent and Garaway hit on 16 of only 40 shots for a good 40 percent. The Tigers meshed 13 of 22 free throw tosses, while Garaway hit on 14 of 15 attempts, the only miss coming early in the game. The Tigers will attempt to enhance their league title hopes Friday when they travel to Midvale to meet the Devils (2-0) (7-3), who are always tough on their home floor.
The Strasburg Reserves (8-1) sacked the Garaway Reserves (7-2) in the 1st game, 44-29.
