67 - Garaway Toughs It Out With Ridgewood 63-58 (12-28-66)

Garaway's Don Richardson wrestles Ridgewood's Tim Jackson for possession of the ball en route to the Pirates' 8th straight victory.

SUGARCREEK - Garaway (8-0), with 3 Sophomores and a Junior among its first 6 players, has one of the youngest basketball teams in the area.  It also has one of the winningest clubs around.  Despite a roughshot performance, perhaps the Pirates' worst of the season, they ended the 1966 portion of their schedule unbeaten last night.  The Bucs hung up their 8th straight win by downing Ridgewood.  Just 11 days ago Garaway topped the same squad 60-45.

When Garaway returns to action the next time it could be for a battle of unbeaten powers; although, Hiland might have much to say about that.  Head Coach Glenn  Bower's team travels to Strasburg next Friday night.  The Tigers will be seeking their 9th triumph tonight when they entertain Hiland.  Between now and the Strasburg game the Pirates have a lot of work on tap for them if brief comments by Bower following last night's game were any indication.  "We were  improving steadily in the first 3 games, but now I don't know," Bower stated.

Garaway, except briefly at the outset,  led all the way.  But, victory was never assured for the Pirates until the last seconds when they moved from a slim 60-58 advantage to the final 5-point margin.  In the 1st half Garaway connected only 7 times in 27 field goal  tries for 25.9 percent.  However, the Pirates ended with 19 fielders in 51 shots for 37.4 percent, while meshing 25 of 39 foul shots.  Ridgewood hit 18 times in 52 attempts for 34.6 percent and made 22 of 37 from the charity line.  Altogether, there were 47 personal fouls called, 22 against Garaway and 25 against Ridgewood.  Kim Sedwick, one of Garaway's Sophomores and the  Bucs' 6-1 pivot man, capped game scoring laurels on 20 points.  Don Richardson  followed with 15 and Errol Miller hit 13.  Top man for the Generals was Mike Hendricks with 15 points.  Mark Williams added 14.

The Garaway Pirates (7-1) dropped the Ridgewood Reserves 40-37 in the 1st game of the night.
