67 - Gnaden In Final Seconds Win Against Winless Dover St. Joseph's 68-67 (1-10-67)

Tuscarawas County's 2nd leading scorer, Dan Jinks (23), unleashes a jump shot during 1st period action of Gnaden's 68-67 win over Dover St. Joseph last night.  Defending for the Ramblers are Pat Mitchell and Dave Myers (52).

Tom Bazzell of Dover St. Joseph's, Wayne Martin of Gnadenhutten and Denny Capezella of the Ramblers duel for possession of the basketball during last night's game in the Dover gym.  In the background for the Indians is Charles Crites (31).

DOVER - A vastly improved Dover St. Joseph's basketball team (0-10), sparked by Denny Capozella and Mark Nelson, came as close to victory last night as it ever will.  The Ramblers took Gnadenhutten (4-6) right down to the final seconds before bowing for the 10th consecutive  time this season.

Don Finnicum and Indian ace Dan Jinks came through with the key points for Gnadenhutten.  Finnicum took only one field goal attempt in the final period and he made it a big one, cashing in a 2-pointer with 35 seconds remaining to play to provide Gnaden a 67-65 lead.  At the 9 second mark Capozella unleashed a jumper for the Ramblers, but it was off its intended mark.  Gnadenhutten rebounded and in the process Jinks was fouled by St. Joseph's Jeff Recchiutti.  There was 5 seconds left in the game.  Rambler mentor Jim Antonelli immediately called a time out.  Then Jinks stepped to the line and drilled in the first of a one-and-one before missing the second.  Dave Myers rebounded for St. Joseph and the Ramblers called another quick time at 4 seconds.  All-Ohio quarterback Myers took only one second to chuck a perfect strike to Capozella at midcourt and St. Joseph's again asked for time.

St. Joseph's, apparently hoping for a foul and a possible 3-point play that could have tied the game, didn't get it from the Indians.  Gnaden Head Coach Jim Lower had his charges positioned stock still and on the Myers throw-in to Capozella all the latter could do was drive untouched for the final 2-point play.  It was a closely-dueled contest throughout with the score being tied on 7 occasions.  Nelson spearheaded the Rambler attack in the 1st period, connecting for 11 of his 19 points.  Capozella, limited to a lone bucket the 1st half, exploded in the 3rd quarter, hitting his first 6 shots and went on to add 12 more 4th quarter points to end with 26.

Gnadenhutten's scoring tandem of Jinks and Bill Kohl received a big helping hand from Wayne Martin before the latter fouled out with 2:26 left in the game.  Jinks scored 20 points, Kohl 18 and Martin 14.  St. Joseph's, trailing 10-3 went into a 1st period press off which it scored 8 straight points as both Nelson and Capozella netted baskets off steals.  The press, combined with a fast-break, provided St. Joseph's a 16-10 lead and they ended the period on top 19-18.  During the 1st stanza the Ramblers hit 9 of 18 goal tries, while the Indians made 8 of 15.  But, in the 2nd St. Joseph's made but 2 of 14, while Gnaden continued its expert marksmanship, making 8 of 16.  The Ramblers, led by Capozella, again waxed hot in the 3rd, pouring in a fantastic 12 of 15 goal tries to tie the game 50-50 after falling behind 36-25 at halftime.  Altogether St. Joseph's made 28 of 65 for 43.1 percent and 11 of 18 free throws.  But, Gnadenhutten was a good measure more accurate, meshing 29 of 56 from the floor for 51.8 percent, while making 10 of 19 foul shots.

Gnadenhutten (3-6) picked up the Reserve win over Dover St. Joseph's in the 1st thriller of the night, 32-30.
