67 - Garaway Stops Hiland 52-46 (12-10-66)
A picture may be worth a 1000 words, but this one is deceiving. It appears that the basketball merging from a tangle of Garaway and Hiland players is just inches from the top of the Pirate gymnasium celling. In the scramble are Kim Sedwick (40) and Don Richardson (34) of the Pirates and Terry Skelly (31) and Merle Mullet (33) of the Hawks.
SUGARCREEK - The youthful Garaway Pirates (4-0) continued to amaze area fans, rallying from an 11-point 3rd quarter deficit to cop a win over arch-rival Hiland (2-3) Saturday night. Errol Miller sparked the Pirate victory drive, pouring in 18 of his 25 points in the final frame to pick up the slack left when veteran Don Richardson, bowed out on 5 personals with 6:44 to go. Trailing 33-22 with 5:20 remaining in the 3rd quarter, the hosts cut the margin to 35-30 at the end of the period. Miller then canned 2 quick field goals at the start of the final stanza to draw the Pirates to within one. It wasn't until 4:45 to go in the game that the Pirates finally caught the Hawks. Tim Miller put the victors in front on a set shot 43-42. It was the 1st lead for the bucaneers since the 17-16 edge with 1:36 gone in the 2nd quarter. The winners never trailed from this point as 2 baskets by Errol Miller and another by Tim Miller wiped out one by Merle Mullet of Hiland to give Garaway a 49-44 lead. Glen Swartzentruber put the Hawks within 3 and could have narrowed the margin to one as he was open after a Pirate turnover. But Ron Troyer was called for traveling. The clock read 1:10. The Pirates then stalled the ball before Errol Miller was intentionally fouled by Hawk Dick Clark with 39 seconds remaining in the contest. Miller stepped to the foul line and cooly put through the 1st of 2 shots. It was at this point that the Pirates sewed up the game as Hiland Coach Abe Mast was tagged with a technical upon calling for his 6th timeout. Miller then went on to sink 2 more charity tosses to give the victors the final margin.
In the final frame the Pirates hit on 8 of 11 action shots and connected on all of 6 attempts from the foul line by Errol Miller. The Hawks found themselves in serious foul trouble in the 3rd period, as 2 were tagged with their 3rd personals and another with his 4th. Terry Skelley was whistled for his 4th foul with 2:09 to go in the quarter having pcked up his 3rd just 15 seconds earlier. Troyer and Clark also accumulated their 3rd personals. Meanwhile, the Pirates were without the services of Don Richardson, who picked up his 4th personal with 4:33 remaining in the 1st half. He was taken out of the lineup and returned at 6:10 in the 3rd before fouling out. He ended with 12 points. The win was the 4th straight without a defeat for the Pirates, while it was Hiland's 3rd straight defeat after opening with 2 victories.
Leading a well-balanced attack for the Hawks was Joe Wengerd, who collected 15 markers. Merle Mullet followed with 14 and Swartzentruber had 9.
