67 - Garaway Escapes Overtime Loss At Port 49-48 (1-20-67)

The action is in the Tuscarawas County Class A League and these photographs are just typical of that action.  Garaway's Don Richardson (35), Port Washington's Greg Bender (52) and several other players from both squads scramble for a loose basketball.

Tuscarawas Valley's Jim Burkhart is dumped head over heels by Jim McCauley (24) and Butch Reed of Tuscarawas.

Mike DeMattio of Midvale topples Gnadenhutten's Don Finnicum off balance in a mid-court caper.

PORT WASHINGTON - Garaway's Pirates (4-1) (11-1) won their 11th game last night, but not before the Port Washington Purple Riders (1-3) (7-5) put up a gallant effort before bowing by 1 point in overtime.  Don Richardson, who ended the contest as the Pirates top scorer with 16, was the man of the hour for the victors.  Errol Miller put the Bucs within 1 in the overtime when he drilled in the 1st shot of a one-and-one foul to make the score 48-47 in favor of Port.  But, Miller missed the 2nd and Richardson was johnny-on-the-spot, tipping in the ball to account for Garaway's victory margin.  Port, after trailing 18-7, 28-20 and 32-30 at the end of the 1st 3 periods, finally caught up at 32-32.  With the Riders leading 44-42 with 30 seconds left, Kim Sedwick mustered 2 points, which sent the game into extra play.

Following Richardson in scoring Garaway were Tim Miller with 12 and Sedwick with 10.  Port's Greg Bender led all point makers with 20.  Each team connected on 18 goals, Garaway in 62 tries for 27 percent and Port in 45 attempts for 40 percent.  The Pirates one-point advantage at the foul line showed the difference.  Garaway had 13 of 21 and Port 12 of 15.  Both squads pulled down 24 rebounds.  Sedwick led Garaway with 8, while Jeff Huston had 11 for the losers.  Garaway was guilty of 11 turnovers and the Riders 9.

The night started off with the Garaway Reserves (10-2) dumping the Port Washington Reserves (4-8) 26-22.
