67 - Strasburg Rolls at Tuscarawas 58-40 (12-16-66)
TUSCARAWAS - John Studer and Company of Strasburg (1-0) (4-0) proved to be too much for the shorter Broncos (0-1) (3-4) last night. The Tigers, who trailed by 4 points at the end of the 1st stanza, potted 19 straight points in a giant 2nd quarter surge to stamp out any Bronco hopes for a victory. Studer was a twisting, ball-hawking menace to the locals collecting 31 points and yanking down half of his team's 42 rebounds to lead the victors in all departments. He repeatedly caused Tusky turnovers to boot.
The Broncos started out as though they were going to give theTigers all they wanted, taking their 1st lead of the contest when Fred Rausch canned a charity shot at 2:41 of the 1st frame to give the hosts a 10-9 lead. Charley Jones, who followed Studer with 18 markers, drew the Tigers even seconds later. But the Broncos held on to the lead the remainder of the quarter. Two baskets by Butch Reed, his only scores of the night, 2 charity tosses by Brent Lehigh and another basket by Jim McCauley with 32 seconds to go in the quarter, gave the Broncos a 6-point lead, 19-13. But, then the Tigers caught fire and tallied their consecutive point total. Studer put the visitors ahead for good after 1:52 had elapsed in the 2nd frame at 20-19. By halftime, the Bengals extended their lead to 14 points, 38-24, while limiting the Broncos to 5 foul shots and holding them goalless in 10 attempts from the field. John Bihari counted the 1st points for the Broncos since late in the 1st stanza with 1:13 to go in the half on a foul shot. During the torrid 2nd quarter, Studer got 11 points.
The stingy Tiger defense continued to harrass the losers in the 2nd half, limiting them to 27 shots of which only 6 hit their target. Meanwhile the explosive Bengal offense was clicking for 32 points in the final 2 quarters. A 2nd rally, which started at the end of the 3rd period and ended with less than 3 minutes left in the contest, saw the Tigers put 18 straight points to gain a 67-34 margin, their biggest of the night. All told, Strasburg hit on 30 of 80 field goal attempts for a respectible 37.5 percent and added 10 of 19 foul attempts. Jones was by far the most accurate in gaining his 18 points, hitting on 7 of 10 field goal attempts. The Broncos; meanwhile, were having a miserable time of it, connecting on only 14 of 51 attempts from the field for 27.5 percent. From the charity stripes, the Broncos tallied on 12 of 18 attempts. The Tigers led in rebounds 42-23,with Jones grabbing 10 to take runnerup honors to Studer. High rebounder for the locals was Bihari with 6. Rausch led the broncos attack, potting 13 points. Lehigh followed with 8 to account for the bulk of Tusky's points.
The Strasburg Reserves (4-0) continued to roll as they handed the Tuscarawas Reserves (5-2) their 2nd straight loss 55-35.
