67 - Port Washington Stops Gnaden 64-60, But Not Jinks! (1-27-67)

A major neighborhood rivalry was on tap last night when Port Washington hosted Gnadenhutten in a Tuscarawas County Class A League game.  The 2 teams met previously with the Riders capturing a 76-54 decision.  Members of the 1966-67 Port Washington team gathered around Head Coach Joe Lopez are:  Jim McCune, Mike Peeper, Gary Stephen, Bob Sauerbrey, Tim Page, Mike Cappel, Jeff Huston, Jim Hagan, Kim Cappel, Jim Hurless and Greg Bender.

PORT WASHINGTON - Port Washington's Purple Riders (2-3) (9-5) nudged through for their 9th win of the season and 2nd league victory, nipping the Gnadenhutten Indians (1-4) (7-7) by 4 points, despite a fine effort by Dan Jinks, last night.  Jinks, the 6-foot Indian Senior, poured in 34 points to match his season single-game high against Garaway on December 24th.  It was the 4th time this season that Jinks passed the 30 point mark.  The Riders jumped off to an early lead and were never headed.  The biggest lead for the Riders was at the close of the 1st quarter when they led 18-12.

Port Washington had 3 men in double figures as Tim Page hit 18 and was followed by Jeff Huston with 16 and Jerry Stephens with 13.  Bill Kohl hit for 15 points and was the big man on the boards with 10 of 26 rebounds for the Indians.  Page gathered in 12 of the Riders 32 rebounds to lead in the rebound department.  Turnovers again proved costly as Port committed 12 and the Indians 9.  The Riders, leading by 6 in the 1st quarter found things a little rougher as they held a 29-27 lead at intermission and a 44-41 lead at the close of the 3rd stanza.

The Port Washington Reserves (6-8) picked up their 2nd win against the Gnadenhutten Indians (3-9) this season by a score of 32-28.
