67 - Garaway Jumps Tuscarawas Valley 58-40 (12-16-66)
Garaway, one of 3 remaining undefeated teams in all of Tuscarawas County (the others are Strasburg and Dennison St. Mary's) sailed to their 5th straight victory Friday night at Tuscarawas Valley. The Pirates are at Ridgewood on Saturday. Members of the 1966-67 squad are: FRONT ROW - Tom Andreas, Reserve Coach Greg Mani, Stan Gerber, Rich Richarson, Mike Gerber, Ray Hisrich, Larry Harding and Head Coach Glenn Bower. BACK ROW - Manager Bob Faver, Ron Richardson, Kim Sedwick, Dan Hicks, Dick Frankhauser, Tim Miller, Manager Bill Miller and Greg Lingler.
The basketball squirted out of this tangled scramble during last night's Garaway-Tuscarawas Valley County Class A League game. Trojans are Dave Clugston (24), Tom Shroyer (54) and Jim Burkhart (34). Pirates in the action are Kim Sedwick (41), Errol Miller and Rich Richardson (25).
DOVER - A neighborly spat that erupted on the basketball courts almost half a century ago resumed last night when theTuscarawas County Class A League opened play for the 1966-67 season. And just like the past 2 seasons 3 neighbors in particular...Strasburg, Midvale and Garaway...were grappling for top league laurels. All 3 emerged victorious with the undefeated Tigers ripping Tuscarawas 70-40 and Garaway, also sporting an unblemished record, downed TuscarawasValley 58-40. Midvale surprised Port Washington and a lot of other people, by scoring a decisive 81-56 triumph over the Purple Riders. As a result of the outcomes Garaway is 5-0, Strasburg is 4-0 and Midvale is 2-3.
ZOARVILLE - Garaway's Pirates (1-0) (5-0) jumped out in front 7-3 early in the 1st quarter and sailed to victory over Tuscarawas Valley (0-1) (1-2). Rich Richardson, Garaway's 5-5 playmaker, was the man of the hour, tallying 17 points in the victory effort. His aggregate included 11 points accumulated in 12 trips to the free throw line. Teammate Kim Sedwick, also on target for the Pirates, added 14 to the cause and pivotman Errol Miller contributed his share by pulling in 8 of the winners 32 rebounds. High Trojan for the night was Larry Adams, who not only led the team in scoring on 14 points, but also controlled the boards hauling in 14 rebounds.
A lead of 6 points, at the end of the 1st quarter, was steadily increased by Garaway until it reached 12 by the half. But a 3rd quarter rally brought the Trojans within 6. Things were just beginning to look bright when a siege of fouls set in and resulted in 2 Trojans being sidelined for the night. With 2 minutes and 28 seconds remainingto be played the score stood 48-38. In those final minutes, Garaway netted 10 points from the foul line. A total of 42 personals were called, 25 of which were against the Trojans. Gasraway capitalised on it and in 38 trips it connected for 30, while theTrojanscould only salvage 6out of 14.
The Tuscarawas Valley Reserves (2-1) handed the Garaway Reserves (4-1) their 1st loss, 28-27.
