67 - Dover St. Johns Remains Winless At Tusky 72-62(1-7-67)
TUSCARAWAS - Dover St. Joseph's (0-9) valiant bid for a 1st win of this cage year went out the window with 2:22 left to play, when John Bihari tapped in a missed connection for a 61-59 Tuscarawas (5-4) lead, which eventually led theBroncos to a 72-62 victory over the Ramblers. The Ramblers started out like a cat on fire when Tom Bazzoli took the opening tip and quickly put in a 2-pointer. Mark Nelson and Dave Myers each followed with buckets to give them the early advantage. But, Bihari got the Broncos rolling by himself after the Ramblers had opened up a 10-2 lead. He potted 6 straight markers, to bring them within 2. The Rams; however, built their margin to 16-8 before Bihari closed out the quarter by scoring 6 more.
As the 1st period ended, St. Joe had 16 and Bihari (Tusky) 14. But, the hustling Ramblers found a lid on the hoop and loud whistles by the officials during the next fracas. Tuscarawas, controlling the backboards throughout the 1st half, jumped to a 31-25 intermission lead. The difference of 6 points came at the foul line. Each team netted 11 field goals, while Tusky made 9 free throws.
St. Joseph hit a sensational 10 of 14 shots through the 3rd period, but could only pull out to a slim 46-43 margin. Denny Capozella and Mark Nelson led the Rambler gunning, with the former getting 4 baskets and the latter three. Capozella got into foul trouble in the quarter, picking up his 4th personal with 2:36 to play. But, Brent Lehigh got red hot and showed the way for the Broncos in the 4th stanza. Lehigh gave the Broncos its 1st lead since early in the 2nd half, 49-48 with 5:40 remaining. Nelson put the Rams back in front with a basket 10 seconds later. Bihari put in another bucket with 5 minutes to go to give the Broncos the lead.
They pushed that margin to 57-52 with 3:30 left. Capozella hit for a 3-pointer at that point. Bazzoli later tied the game at 57 all on 2 free throws. From that point, along with Bihari's go ahead bucket, Lehigh continued to hit from the corner. Capozella fouled out with about 2 minutes to go, which hurt the Ramblers considerably, as did Nelson's loss. Bihari finished as the game's top pointmaker with 33, 23 coming in the 1st half. Lehigh followed with 18, twelve coming in the last quarter.
The Ramblers had a more balanced attack, as Capozella and Nelson each made 19 points. Bazzoli finished with 13 and Dave Myers 8. The Broncos out-rebounded St. Joseph 48 to 25, with Bihari snaring 18 and Lehigh 11. Myers topped the losers with 8. From the floor the Broncos shot 35.4 percent on 27 of 76, while making the decisive 18 of 24 at the foul line. St. Joe made 27 of 67 for 40.2 percent and only 8 of 12 from the charity stripe. St. Joseph's sticky full court press caused many of the 25 turnovers for which Tusky was guilty. The Rams played a fine ball-controlling game, as 5 turnovers would show.
The Rambler Reserves (1-8) lost to the Tuscarawas Reserves (7-2) 52-27. After leading 6-1 at the end of the 1st period, the Broncos surged out in front 16-13 at halftime. It remained close after 3 quarters of play 29-25 in favor of Tusky. But, St. Joseph could manage but 2 points in the final affair, while the Broncos poured through 23. Les Donahue topped the victors with 16, while Dave Young was high for St. Joe with 10.
