67 - Strasburg Defense Hampers Gnaden 77-52 (12-20-66)
Strasburg's Ed Yackey (53) hauls down a rebound, one of 18 he had for the night, against Gnadenhutten. Defending for the Tribe areDan Jinks (22), Ken Huprich (44) andBill Kohl.
GNADENHUTTEN - Credit Strasburg (6-0) with a tough defense. It was tenacious defense, combined with their usual explosive offense, that led the Tigers to break open a close game in the 2nd period at Gnadenhutten (2-3) last night and score their 6th straight win. Gnadenhutten still scored more points on the Bengals than any other team this season in bowing to the Tigers. But, in the 2nd quarter, the Indians couldn't buy a bucket. Tigers Ed Rusk and Ed Yackey turned in near-perfect performances against Gnadenhutten's 2 leading marksmen...Dan Jinks and Bill Kohl, respectively.
Jinks, who went on to score 19 markers, was held scoreless by Rusk and Kohl, who ended the night with 21. In the 1st period, John Studer was limited to a 2-pointer by Yackey. During the 2nd stanza Gnaden managed to score but 4 points, while the Tigers, led by John Studer's 10, hit 12 to gain a 28-13 halftime lead. Kohl kept the Tribe in the ball game in the 3rd period when he tallied 13 points, including 6 for 6 from the field, as the 2 squads dueled to a virtual standstill. Strasburg scoring 23 points and Gnadenhutten 22. Studer, a whirling, churning, ball-hawking monster in the Indians' hide, looked every bit the All-Ohioan he was last season.
Although limited to just 2 points in the opening quarter he came on strong in the final 3 to finish with 31 in addition to grabbing 20 of Strasburg's 40 rebounds. Charlie Jones, whom many Strasburgers believed to be the most underrated player on theTiger club, gained runnerup scoring laurels on 13 points. Rusk and Yackey, the defensive sparklers, who helped the Tigers continue to limit its foes to an average of 40.2 points per game, also tallied in double figures. The former connected for 12, the latter for 11 and pulled down 18 rebounds.
Strasburg poured in 13 fielders in 63 attempts for 46.8 percent and made 13 of 21 foul shots. Gnaden hit 20 of 52 for 26.5 percent, made 12 of 19 free throws and 27 rebounds. Kohl was top rebounder with 10. Both clubs will be engaged in Tuscarawas County Class A League contests Friday night with the Tigers traveling to Port Washington and the Indians going to Garaway.
The Strasburg Reserves (6-0) won the contest over the Gnadenhutten Reserves (1-3), but the score was not report. **2 Gnaden games were not reported.
