67 - Tuscarawas County 1966-67 Class A Basketball League Update

Midvale High School (Blue Devils) - Lee Eberly (208 Points)

DOVER - Dan Jinks unfuried the most smoke as nets continued to burn in the Tuscarawas County's torrid scoring race.  Jinks closed in on the league scoring leader, Strasburg's John Studer, with a 72-point outburst on Friday and Saturday nights.  The eagle-eyed marksman rimmed 34 against Port Washington Friday night and 38 against Newcomerstown on Saturday,  With a total of 375 points for the season and an average of 25.0 per outing, Jinks managed to come within 25 points of Studer who owns an average of 26.6.  Studer collected 35 Friday night at Tuscarawas Valley to enter, all alone, the elite class of 400.  If Studer could continue to hold a hot hand, a slight possibility looms for him to bag 500 points for the regular season.  Four players jumped into the 200 point class over the weekend as Lee Eberly and Mike DeMattio of Midvale and Brent Lehigh and John Bihari of Tuscarawas continued to score consistently.

Team totals are still being dominated by Strasburg as it continues to lead in both offense and defense departments.  The Tigers have scored a total of 1191, while holding their opponents to 654.  The offensive average of Strsburg at this time last week was 78.8 and has dipped to 72.6, but at the same time the Tigers defense has tightened and allowed 43.6 points per contest.  Garaway proved to be the stingiest team in the county when it comes to giving out points.  The Pirates now hold 1st place by limiting their foes to a slim 41 points per contest.

67 - Port Washington Whips Zane Trace Again 63-61 (1-28-67)

OLD WASHINGTON - The Port Washington Purple Riders (10-5) notched their 2nd win against Zane Trace his season by nipping the host team by 2 points.  Port had beaten the Indians in the Riders' 1st game of the season, 40-35.  However, Port had to fight for its life in the last 3 minutes after leading throughout the contest in this game.  With 2 minutes remaining in the 4th quarter, Zane forged ahead 60-57, forcing the Riders to come from their zone defense to a pressing man to man.  Two foul shots by Greg Bender in the last 30 seconds provided the margin of victory.  Port slipped into a cold 4th period and could manage but 2 field goals, but the aggressive Tracers committed many fouls to take themselves out of the contest.  At the charity stripe, Port cashed in on 25 of 36 and that was the difference, as Zane had 15 opportunities and could rim only 2 of those.  From the floor, Port hit 19 of 45 for 52 percent, while the Guernsey Countians netted 26 of 66 for 46 percent, as both teams grabbed 30 rebounds each.  Jim Hagan led in this department with 9 for the Purple Riders.

The Zane Trace Reserves started the night by knocking off the Port Washington Reserves (6-9) 43-40 in overtime.

67 - Garaway Falls To Hiland! 42-38 (1-28-67)

Count'em if you will, but there's 9 of the 10 players participating in Saturday night's Hiland-Garaway clash in this photograph.  Tim Miller (31) of the Pirates hauls down a rebound, while 7 others identifiable are:  Kermit Miller (32) of the Hawks, Don Richardson of Garaway, Merle Mullet (34) of Hiland, Kim Sedwick (41) of Garaway, Terry Skelly (30) of Hiland, Errol Miller (45) of Garaway and Galen Swartzentruber (24) of Hiland.

Galen Swartzentruber (24), Hiland Hawk guard, makes a move against Garaway's Kim Sedwick in Saturday night's contest on the Hawk hardwoods.

BERLIN - Opportunity knocked Saturday night and the Hiland Hawks (8-8) feathered their nest by pulling a major upset over the Garaway Pirates (13-2).  Final score was by 4 points, but not before an SRO (standing room only) crowd had visions of the Pirates turning the rival contest into a rout, as they held a 10-point margin one time in the 3rd quarter.  Fans jammed the gym early and the remainder wanting to see the clash were steered into the auditorium to view the action on closed circuit television.  The 1st quarter found both clubs geared down to a deliverate styled offense to take only the good shots.  The Bucs jumped to a 4-0 lead on 2 pointers by the Richardson boys before the Hawks scored on a foul shot by Kermit Miller, to go on top 8-6.  But, Tim Miller hit a 15 foot jumper at the buzzer to knot the count 8-8.

Head Coach Glenn Bower's Pirates outscored the Hawks 14-10 in the 2nd stanza and it was the charity stripe that kept the Bucs from widening the gap.  Hiland connected on 6 of 7 foul shots to keep pace as Garaway's defense permitted only 2 baskets and the Pirates led 22-18 at halftime.  The 3rd frame appeared to be the end of the fighting Hawks as Garaway opened the gap to 10 points.  Don Richardson hit a 2-pointer and Dex Sedwick swished the nets for 2 quick goals, to make the score 33-23 and forced Head Coach Abe Mast to call a time out.  Before the quarter ended; however, Hiland had the margin down to 4, as Merle Mullett and Galen Swartzentruber hit from around the key.  The 4th period was just too long for the Bucs as the Hawks would not be denied.  The Pirates could do nothing right and the Hawks nothing wrong, as the actioni became more tense.  Merle Mullett opened the scoring with 2 foul shots, followed by 2 more by Joe Wengerd and Terry Skelly hit a jumper to make it 35-34, the 1st Hiland lead since early in the 1st quarter.

Garaway fans went wild when Hiland missed 3 foul shots in succession to keep the fighting Bucs' hopes alive and Don Richardson hit a long jumper to bring the difference to another 1 point margin, 39-38.  With 9 seconds on the clock, Galen Swartzentruber fouled Mike Gerber and Garaway had its' last chance to hang on.  The ball rolled around the hoop and was grabbed by Mullett.  In the last 7 seconds Hiland scored 3 more from the foul line.  The margin of victory was at the foul line as Hiland cashed in on 20 of 31, while Garaway had 6 of 11, not a foul shot coming in the 1st quarter.  From the floor, Garaway dominated the action as it netted 16 of 37 for 43 percent.  Hiland bagged 11 of 36 for a cooler 31 percent.  Tim Miller led the Garaway attack on 12 markers followed by Don Richardson and Errol Miller with 8 each.  Merle Mullett with 15 reaped scoring honors followed by Skelly with 10.

Since the Hiland Reserves bumped off a good Garaway Reserves team (11-3) Hiland swept the night when they hammered them 51-23 to start the night off.

67 - Tusky Jabs Jewett 81-72 (1-28-67)

TUSCARAWAS - Tuscarawas Broncos (8-7) had one of their hottest nights of the season Saturday night and handed the Jewett Wildcats a 9-point defeat.  The Broncos jumped to a 23-15 first quarter lead and were never headed except for a tie score at the half.  The constant parade to the foul line piled the score as Tusky reaped 23 of 32 and Jewett 18 of 35.

Top offensive performances by Brent Lehigh with 29 and John Bihari 24, kept the nets sizzling for the Tuscarawas quintet.  Every player on both teams hit the scoring column as a consistent barrage  of points kept the fans on edge.  Jewett also displayed a balanced attack as 3 starters joined the double figure group.  Rick Harkins with 21, Scott Samples 18 and Randy Schultz with 13 provided plenty of trouble for the men of Head Coach Lyle Matlick.  Action shots found Tusky hitting 29 of 77 for 37 percent and Jewett 26 of 91 for 29 percent as both combinations never missed an opportunity to fire at the basket.  The Broncos outrebounded their foes to the tune of 52 to 34, with Lehigh leading both sides with 17.

67 - Gnaden Trims Newcomerstown 77-76 (1-28-67)

NEWCOMERSTOWN - Dan Jinks and company again pulled one out of the fire as the Gnadenhutten Indians (7-8) sneaked by the Newcomerstown Trojans (2-13) with 2 late foul shots by Bill Kohl.  Jinks hit 38 points to total 72 for the weekend as he gathered in 34 Friday night.  It also gives him a total of 375 for the season for a 25 point average.  The Indians held quarter leads of 14-11 and 32-25, but fell behind 51-50 at the close of the 3rd quarter.  In the 2nd quarter the Indians had an 11 point lead, but the determined Trojans held on to tie the score several times.  Gnaden led 75-74 with one minute to play as Bill Kohl put in 2 foul shots to put the Indians in front 77-74, but with 15 seconds left Jeff Schmidt hit a 25 footer to put the Trojans behind 77-76.  From there on the Indians put the freeze and the ice on it to win the contest.  Helping Jinks in the point department was Don Finnicum with 17 and Kohl with 10.  Leading the scoring for the Trojans 4 men were in the double figure bracket with Schmidt leading the way with 19 and followed closely by Ernie Triplett with 18 and Ron Hurst and Bruce Widder with 12 and 10, respectively.  Both teams had good nights from the floor with the Indians hitting on 29 of 60 and the Trojans 29 of 59.  From the charity stripe the Indians were 19 of 32 and Newcomerstown 18 of 31.

67 - Port Washington Stops Gnaden 64-60, But Not Jinks! (1-27-67)

A major neighborhood rivalry was on tap last night when Port Washington hosted Gnadenhutten in a Tuscarawas County Class A League game.  The 2 teams met previously with the Riders capturing a 76-54 decision.  Members of the 1966-67 Port Washington team gathered around Head Coach Joe Lopez are:  Jim McCune, Mike Peeper, Gary Stephen, Bob Sauerbrey, Tim Page, Mike Cappel, Jeff Huston, Jim Hagan, Kim Cappel, Jim Hurless and Greg Bender.

PORT WASHINGTON - Port Washington's Purple Riders (2-3) (9-5) nudged through for their 9th win of the season and 2nd league victory, nipping the Gnadenhutten Indians (1-4) (7-7) by 4 points, despite a fine effort by Dan Jinks, last night.  Jinks, the 6-foot Indian Senior, poured in 34 points to match his season single-game high against Garaway on December 24th.  It was the 4th time this season that Jinks passed the 30 point mark.  The Riders jumped off to an early lead and were never headed.  The biggest lead for the Riders was at the close of the 1st quarter when they led 18-12.

Port Washington had 3 men in double figures as Tim Page hit 18 and was followed by Jeff Huston with 16 and Jerry Stephens with 13.  Bill Kohl hit for 15 points and was the big man on the boards with 10 of 26 rebounds for the Indians.  Page gathered in 12 of the Riders 32 rebounds to lead in the rebound department.  Turnovers again proved costly as Port committed 12 and the Indians 9.  The Riders, leading by 6 in the 1st quarter found things a little rougher as they held a 29-27 lead at intermission and a 44-41 lead at the close of the 3rd stanza.

The Port Washington Reserves (6-8) picked up their 2nd win against the Gnadenhutten Indians (3-9) this season by a score of 32-28.

Larry Adams of Tuscarawas Valley looses possession of the basketball in a scramble under the boards with Strasburg's John Studer (23) and Gene Bayer (31).

Ed Yackey (53) of Strasburg leaps high to let loose with a jump shot after taking a rebound against TV despite the defense efforts of Trojan Larry Adams.  In the background is Mike Rieger (41) of the Bengals.

ZOARVILLE - The mighty Strasburg Tigers (5-0) (15-0) scored their 2nd win of the season over host TV last night to keep its unblemished record.  It was a 38-point victory at the end, but Head Coach Charlie Huggins modestly pointed to his defense which limited the Trojans to 8 points in the 4th quarter.  In spite of the fine defensive performance, the offensive thrust could not be denied as the Tigers pumped in 31 of 58 attempts from the floor for a fine 53 percent.  Once again it was All-Ohio John Studer who turned in a magnificent performance with 35 points and 18 rebounds.  Charlie Jones canned 13 for the only other Bengal to hit the column of double figures.  The Trojan offense was led by Larry Adams with 11.  Dick Harvey followed with 8.  Adams also led his team in the rebounding department with 5 of the 25, the Valleymen were able to pull down.  Studer's hot hand last night was the single-game high this season and brings his point total to an even 400 with 3 games remaining on the season schedule.

67 - Midvale Nips Tuscarawas 59-54 (1-27-67)

Tuscarawas was seeking to boost its overall record of 8-6 and 2-3 in the Tuscarawas County Class A League on Friday night when it invaded Midvale for a crucial loop contest.  The Broncos met Midvale in their season opener and scored a 49-41 victory.  Members of the team are:  Ed Smith, Butch Reed, Jim McCauley, Birney McCauley, Bill Goshorn, Les Donehue, Mark Cox, Tracy Knisely, John Bihari, Brent Lehigh, Fred Rausch, Manager Vic Reed and Head Coach Lyle Matlick.

MIDVALE - The Midvale Blue Devils (4-1) (11-6) set the stage for its hassle with Garaway next Friday night for 2nd place in the county league in nipping the Tuscarawas Broncos (1-4) (7-7) last night.  Should Midvale beat Garaway or vice-versa either team would have a chance to share the county league championship if Gnadenhutten upset Strasburg.  Midvale jumped off to an early lead of 3-0 and never trailed, but had its hands full with the determined Broncos.  The Broncos came within one point several times, but could not get into the lead.

Mike DeMattio was again the big man for the Blue Devils scoring 19 points and was assisted by Bob Carlisle with 16.  In the point department for the Broncos, Brent Lehigh led all scorers with 17 and was followed by Jim McCauley and Butch Reed with 10 each.  Both teams' shooting was not up to par as Midvale hit on 19 of 60 and the Broncos 23 of 58.  From the foul line the Blue Devils were 21 of 32 and the Broncos were 8 of 21.  A total of 30 turnovers marred the offensive game again as the Blue Devils were guilty of 12 and the Broncos 18.

The Midvale Reserves (10-7) started off the night by jumping the Tuscarawas Reserves (10-4) and claiming a 48-39 victory.

67 - Tuscarawas County Schools To End Cage League Setup

DOVER - Tuscarawas County's Class A Basketball League, in existence nearly a half century, will be dissolved in favor of establishing a tri-county basketball league.  It's hoped the new scholastic league will begin operation by the beginning of the 1967-68 basketball season.  If not then, definitely by the 1968-69 campaign.  Action came last night during a meeting of league officials in Tuscarawas High School.  Announcement was made this morning by Racey Morris, Garaway principal and league treasurer serving as spokesman for league president Neil Compton of Port Washington, who was unable to attend.

Morris stated the new league will be expanded to include Newcomerstown, Ridgewood and Hiland.  Each of those schools had a representative present last night.  Major consideration in taking the step, according to Morris, was the current uncertainty in the Indian Valley school district which embraces 4 county league members.  School officials, due to the twin defeats of a levy which would provide funds for construction of a central high school, are considering a 2-school district next year.  Morris stated because of that the new league at present will not seek additional teams.  If Indian Valley would go to the 2-school setup, he said, further expansion may be considered.

The Indian Valley merger of Midvale, Gnadenhutten, Tuscarawas and Port Washington is the latest of a series of consolidations which has trimmed the county league from 11 teams to the present 7.  Also in the loop are Strasburg, Tuscarawas Valley and Garaway, the latter 2 consolidations involving Baltic, Sugarcreek-Shanesville and Dundee, and Bolivar and Mineral City, respectively.  Dennison also was a memberinthe early 1920's.

Because Indian Valley involves 3 football-playing schools...Midvale, Gnadenhutten and Tuscarawas...its present situation also affected planning by Tuscarawas Valley Athletic Conference officials, also meeting last night at Tuscarawas.  Discussion centered on scheduling problems and another meeting was set for May.  Effective with the 1968 season the TVC loses Tuscarawas Valley, which is joining the Stark County Senate League.  Simultaneously, Newcomerstown gains full-fledged TVC status.  Other members are Strasburg, Garaway, Malvern and Ridgewood.

67 - Garaway Runs Up Against A Stubborn Dover St. Joseph's Team 58-50 (1-24-67)

Jeff Recchiuti of Dover St. Joseph's may be getting in a little foul trouble here, leaning over Garaway's Don Richardson in a duel for possession of the basketball.

Garaway's Kim Sedwick (41) is attempting to get off a shot after grabbing a rebound in this action from last night's game against Dover St. Joseph's.  Teammate Don Richardson tries to give a helping hand, while interested in stopping Sedwick's effort are Denny Capezella (30) and Mark Nelson (40) of St. Joseph.  Rich Richardson (25) of Garaway and  Jeff Recchiusti of the Ramblers are "spectators."

DOVER - A battling band of Dover St. Joseph's Ramblers (1-12) took Garaway's once...defeated Pirates(13-1)  right down to the final seconds last night before succumbing 58-50.  St. Joseph's sparked by Senior forward Denny Capozella, had the Bucs on the ropes throughout the entire 1st half.  Capozella, who ended with 26 points, pumped in 16 of them during the opening 2 stanzas, including 10 in the 1st quarter.

Meanwhile, St. Joseph's defense was greeting the Bucs at midcourt.  It caused the invaders a heap of trouble and as a result threw their offense off kilter.  Garaway missed at least a half doen bunnies and made but 6 of 28 field goal attempts in those 2 quarters.  That, plus Capozella's hot hand, led the Ramblers to spurt to leads of 9-2 and 13-4 at the outset before the initial canto ended 13-8, favor of St. Joseph.  Garaway closed the gap to 13-12 in the 2nd as St. Joseph's didn't connect on its 1st goal of the quarter until 5:05 remained when Capozella swished a jumper.

St. Joseph's maintained the upper hand until 5:59 of the 3rd quarter.  Pirate Don Richardson boosted the Bucs into the lead at 30-29 with a 3-point play, a goal and free throw, after being fouled by Rambler Dave Myers.  It was the 1st time Garaway led.  The score was knotted at 30-30 before Sophomore pivot man Kim Sedwick connected on both ends of a 2-shot foul, putting Garaway ahead for keeps.  Despite forging to 5 and 6 point margins on several occasions Garaway couldn't wrap up the verdict until the last seconds.  Behind 53-46 with slightly more than a minute to play, St. Joseph's trimmed the Garaway margin to 2 points, 52-50, as Capozella hit a jumper and followed it with a pair of free throws after Don Richardson incurred his 5th personal of the game.  That came with 36 seconds left to play.

But with Garaway maintaining possession, St. Joseph was forced to foul in an attempt to get the ball.  Ray Hisrich, a 5-5 Junior, started the foul line parade for Garaway, hitting the 1st of a one-and-one to put the Bucs up to all but ice the verdict.  Just to assure it; however, Mike Gerber made both ends of a one-and-one and Hisrich duplicated the performance shortly thereafter.  Leading Pirate scoring were Tim Miller and Kim Sedwick with 15 and 13 points.

St. Joseph's, which dropped in 20 of 25 free throws in defeating Kidron Christian last Friday night, had its troubles at the charity line this time, making but 10 of 24.  Garaway, on the other hand, fired in 26 of 38 which accounted for its victory margin.  It had only 16 goals, while the Ramblers made 20.  The Ramblers fielders came in 60 attempts for 33.3 percent, while Garaway counted its total in 58 tries for 31.1 percent, a far cry from the 50-plus percentage it recorded in defeating Newcomerstown last Saturday night.

Garaway Reserves (11-2) dropped the Dover St. Joseph's Reserves 31-20.

67 - Midvale Handles Tuscarawas Valley 58-47 (1-24-67)

Mike DeMattio (45) of Midvale and Tuscarawas Valley's Larry Adams are caught in a back-to-back scramble for the basketball during last night's game on the Trojan hardwoods.  Also seen in the action is Blue Devil Tom Booth (21).

ZOARVILLE - Midvale (10-6) treated Tuscarawas Valley (3-9) in an unfriendly manner by handing them an 11-point defeat last night.  Turnovers played havoc with any scoring threat the Trojans had in mind as they were guilty of 17 miscues.  The contest was played in a deliberate style of offense by both clubs and it was the fine shooting performance of Midvale's Lee Eberly that put the Blue Devils in an early lead.

Eberly hit 4 for 4 set shots, all beyond the 15 foot line to help the Devils to an 18-12 first quarter lead.  They were never headed as Eberly was ably assisted by a fine performance from veteran Bob Carlisle who had 20 points and 16 rebounds.  Dave Clugston topped Trojan scoring with 13 followed by Dick Harvey's 12.  Tom Schroyer was high with 8 rebounds.  TV connected on 21 of 49 actions for 44.8 percent.  Midvale hit 21 of 44 from the floor for a 47.8 percentage.  The game was played in a rather quiet atmosphere until 3:39 left in the 4th quarter when Carlisle and Tusky Valley's Dick Harvey came together under the basket.  When it appeared they wanted to square off, Blue Devil Mike DeMattio came to the rescue of his teammate and was ejected by referees Ray Kennedy and Nick Costello.

The Midvale Reserves (9-7) started the sweep by downing the Tuscarawas Valley Reserves (6-5) 55-47.

67 - Tuscarawas County 1966-67 Class A Basketball League Update

Midvale High School (Blue Devils) - Bob Carlisle (234)

Strasburg High School (Tigers) - Charlie Jones (203)

DOVER - One more Tuscarawas County basketball player has moved past the 300-point mark and 3 went over 200 points as a result of their efforts in  last week's contests.  Gnadenhutten's Dan Jinks joined Strasburg's John Studer in the 300-point circle with 303 points.  Studer, the county's top scorer with 365 points, has the best average and increased his standard from a week ago.  Jumping over the 200-point mark were Midvale's Bob Carlisle (234), Gnadenhutten's Bill Kohl (221) and Strasburg's Charlie Jones (203).

Strasburg maintained its pace as the most field offensive and defensive machines in the county.  It hiked its Offensive average from 78.8 of a week ago to 79.1, while decreasing its Defensive standard from 45.3 to 44.2 points per outing.  Garaway retained the runner-up slot in defense, its average increasing slightly from 47.6 to 47.9.

67 - Port Washington Puts Down Midvale 48-47 (1-21-67)

PORT WASHINGTON - Greg Bender's foul shot with 17 seconds remaining to play was the victory margin Saturday night when Port Washington (8-5) nipped Midvale (9-6) in a non-league game.  The Purple Riders trailed throughout the game until 3 minutes left in the game when it knotted the count 42-42.  Midvale regained the lead 44-42, Port tied it at 44-44, the Blue Devils went on top 46-44 and Jim Hagan's fielder deadlocked the count at 46-46.  Blue Devil Lee Eberly then sank a charity toss to provide the invaders a 47-46 margin, setting the stage for Bender's heroics.  Each team had scoring opportunities afterwards, but neither could connect.  The Port triumph avenged an earlier setback of 81-56 at the hands of Midvale in a league game.

Jerry Stephens led the Riders' attack on 17 points and Bender followed with 14.  Bob Carlisle's 21 topped Midvale.  Jeff Huston grabbed 10 of Port Washington's 24 rebounds and Carlisle had 10 of Midvale's 21.  Port Washington, which observes homecoming Friday night when it entertains Gnadenhutten in a Tuscarawas County Class A League encounter, hit 19 of 47 field goal tries for 40 percent and 10 of 12 charity tosses.  Midvale, which plays Tuscarawas Friday in a league game,  made 20 of 48 from the floor for 42 percent and 7 of 10 foul shots.

The Port Washington Reserves (5-8) clipped the Midvale Reserves (8-7) 31-28 for a rare sweep of Midvale.

67 - Strasburg Breezes Past Zane Trace 74-29 (1-21-67)

CAMBRIDGE - Outmanned Zane Trace of Guernsey County never had a chance against Strasburg's powerful Tigers (14-0) on Saturday night.  The Tigers blanked Zane Trace in the 1st quarter and allowed the hosts but 4 in the 2nd to take a 30-4 halftime lead.  Strasburg started slowly and failed to gain momentum until half way through the 2nd quarter.  After that it was all Strasburg.

Strasburg maneuvered for easy shots to connect on 31 of 59 action attempts for a torried 52 percent.  Zane Trace was held to 31 shots from the floor and connected on 12 of these for 39 percent.  Once again the pace was set by All-Ohio John Studer as he racked up 12 buckets and 3 fouls for 27.  Ed Yackey netted 12 and Gene Bayer 10.  Head Coach Charlie Huggins substituted freely and in the final 4 minutes of the game Sophomore Butch Haswell canned 10 markers to add confidence to Huggins' bench strength.  Bill Larrick, 6-1 Junior center, set the pace for Zane with 13.  The contest was played free of unnecessary fouls as Strasburg hit 12 of 17 and the hosts 7 of 12.

The Zane Trace Reserves also found the Strasburg Reserve (12-1) team just as tough as the varsity as they bit the dust 55-24.
