Conotton Valley Knocks Off Hiland 66-51 (2-18-65)

NEW PHILADELPHIA - Highlight of the evening for most of the fans was the Hiland-Conotton Valley rematch.  Errol Jacobs' Rockets (17-2), 48-45 loser to the Hawks (15-6) during the regular season, put on quite a show.  Using a collapsing defense, they pilfered several passes and kept applying pressure on offense by blistering the nets for 63 percent of their shots.  Although the Harrison  Countians committed 20 turnovers to 16 for Hiland, the Hawks' miscues came in  the early stages of the game and did the most damage.  Bob Schrock's men tried to work the ball into the key for a quarter and a half to no avail, losing the ball 7 times in the initial period alone.  Conotton Valley used great balance on offense and spurted to a 19-7 advantage at the 1st stop.  Hiland led 3-0.  The Hawks tried galiantly to get back in contention all night, but couldn't catch the smooth-working Rockets.  The Rockets erupted for 9 straight points midway in the 2nd stanza for a 30-15 margin only to have the Hawks come back with the same number in a row.  But the Rockets led 32-26 by intermission.  Rocket Jim Sell inadvertently tipped the ball into Hiland's basket halfway through the 3rd canto to make the count 43-34 and this ignited the Hawks who waxed hot and moved to within 4 points, 43-39.  But a pair of fouls each by Sell and Jim Monigold plus a bucket by Monigold  hiked the Rocket margin to 49-39 and they led 49-41 going into the last period.  Conotton Valley pushed its lead to 53-41 at the outset of the final frame and after the Hawks scored 4 points, Sell rimmed a goal and John Conner 4 charities to make the score 59-45 with 2:45 remaining.  Monigold, the steady influence for the Rockets, took game honors with 20.  He got ample support from Conner with 15, Neil Tope with 12 and Greg Kurtz with 10.  Kurtz snared 9 rebounds, Conner 7, Sell 6 and Ken Beamer 5 as the Rockets led 34-21 in this category.  High scorer for the Hawks was Ron Miller who netted 13.  Ken Miller had 11 and don Yutzy 10.  Ken Miller was top rebounder with 7.  Conotton Valley made 22 of 35 floor shots and 22 of 29 fouls.  Hiland was 17 of 54 for 31 percent and 17 of 23 charities.
