65 - Port Washington Knocks Off Tusky Valley 66-58 (2-12-65)
PORT WASHINGTON - Port Washington (2-6) (6-11) closed out the regular portion of its 1964-65 campaign on a winning note as it came from behind and went on to chalk up a county league victory over invading Tuscarawas Valley (2-6) (4-13). The Riders accomplished it on the wings of well-balanced scoring as 4 players ended in double figures. Leonard Cameron led the way with 21 points. He was followed by Dan Gay's 14, Rich Fillman's 11 and Bob Casteel's 10. At the same time, the Trojans placed 2 players in twin figures, Bob Burris tallying 27 points and Harold Swinford 14. TV grabbed a slim 13-12 lead at the conclusion of first-period activity. It relinquished it once at 14-13 to the Riders in the 2nd stanza before the 2 teams battled to a 30-30 halftime deadlock. The Purple Riders went on top early in the 3rd quarter and stayed in the driver's seat the remaining distance. From the field, the Riders connected on 41 percent of its shots. They pulled down 23 rebounds, Dan Gay snagging 8 and Leonard Cameron 7. Port cashed in on 22 of 37 free throws and Tusky Valley 16 of 30. As a result of its victory, the Riders end the season. Tuscarawas Valley writes finis to its pre-tournament activity tonight when it entertains Tuslaw. Tuscarawas Valley (7-8) slipped by Port Washington (3-9) 47-46 in the Reserve game.

NOTE: This concludes the Tuscarawas County A Basketball League with Midvale, Garaway, and Strasburg all tied at 7-1 for the Championship Trophy. This was the first 3-way deadlock since the 1950-51 campaign when Strasburg, Midvale and Tuscarawas were all 8-2. Winning at least part of the title is becoming a habit with Strasburg and Midvale which also took the honors tied in the 1962-63 and 1963-64 seasons with 7-1 records. In the 1961-62 season Midvale and Garaway were tied for 1st with 7-1 records and again in the 1960-61 season Garaway and Tuscarawas Valley were tied for 1st yet again at 7-1. Garaway owns the last outright championship on the basis of it 8-0 ledger in 1959-60.
