NEW PHILADELPHIA - The Tigers (12-7) made the 3rd time the charm against the Blue Devils, winning in surprisingly easy fashion. Midvale (16-3) had won 2 regular season games from Strasburg, 57-54 and 68-66. Tight defensive play and alertness on offense enabled Strasburg's talented Tigers to turn back Midvale. Using a zone, Strasburg forced Midvale to shoot from far away all night and the Blue Devils just weren't on target. They sank 21 of 56 floor flings for 37 percent. The Tigers; meanwhile, spotted openings in Midvale's defense and went in for numerous layups. When they couldn't drive in, the Tigers reverted to long-range artillery. They fired in 21 of 38 attempts for a blistering 55 percent. As the field goal totals indicate, the Tigers actually won at the free throw line by coming through under pressure with 21 "hits" in 33 tries. The Blue Devils canned 8 of 15, far off their usual pace. The score was tied 4 times in the 1st frame before Sophomore sensastion John Studer rimmed a corner shot to put the Tigers ahead for keeps at 11-9. The clock read 1:00. That's the way the count stayed by the initial rest. It was 13-11 in the 2nd stanza when the Tigers actually iced the verdict by ramming in 9 straight points and outscoring the Blue Devils 15-3 in this stretch. They led 30-16 at the intermission. Strasburg hiked its advantage to 35-18 in the 3rd period before the Blue Devils rallied and got new life, the 2 teams going into the final 3 minutes of play separated by 10 points, 41-31. But, the classy Tigers quickly squelched any Blue Devil hopes by rimming 7 points to Midvale's 2 to take a 48-33 margin by 5:19. Rock VanFossen spearheaded the Tiger offensive, whistling in 29 points, mostly on drives or fast breaks. Ron Lab worked for 13, Rick Hall 9, Studer 8 and Tom Dreher 4. Terry Leggett was the only Blue Devil up to par, canning 26 points. Nearly all came from long jump shots. High-scoring Dan Kohler was held to 10. The 2 teams were about even in rebounds, Strasburg having the upper hand 23-22. Hall was the top Tiger rebounder, grabbing 9. Kohler leaned for 16. In turnovers, the Tigers committed 8...a pair in each quarter...and the Blue Devils 4...a pair in each of the 1st two periods.
