65 - Down The Line With Dan Kopp

DOVER - "I plan to stay in coaching, but I don't have anything lined up at this time."  This was Robert (Pete) Shahan's comment yesterday after it was learned he had resigned as basketball-track coach at Strasburg High.  The resignation didn't come as a surprise.  Although Shahan's teams compiled a great record (34-10) over 2 seasons, including a pair of league titles, many Tiger backers felt the mark should have been better.  At least, they believe the 2 squads should have advanced farther in tournament play.  There has been open criticism of  Shahan's coaching tactics and, while he claims there was no direct pressure to resign, I'm sure he was asked to do so.  Dick Gummere, Dover graduate and present assistant at Strasburg, is rumored to be in line for Shahan's job.  There has been talk; however, that the board of education wants a more experienced man for the post.  Warren Binder, who toiled as Tiger boss 4 seasons and recently was fired after 2 campaigns at Alliance, has expressed interest in returning.  Talk on Binder; however, is that he is too outspoken for the Strasburg board and it doesn't plan to even consider rehiring him.

While we're on the subject of coaches resigning, look for Ken Gold to hand in his resignation soon.  Gold, basketball coach at Tuscarawas Valley, also serves as principal and athletic director.  That's quite a load for any man to  carry.  And don't be surprised if Charles Huggins is the next Trojan coach.  Huggins has done a great job at Stone Creek the past 2 seasons, but must find other employment now that Stone  Creek is merging with New Philadelphia.

I've also learned that John Haugh will be leaving Newcomerstown High soon.  He's head cage coach there.
