NEW PHILADELPHIA - Conotton Valley (18-2) was pressured more than it expected to be by Malvern (5-12) before breaking the tussle open in the last quarter for a 51-36 margin. The Green Hornets kept pace with the touted Rockets most of the way and led 10-8 at the 1st stop. Conotton Valley was on top 22-19 at the half and 34-26 going into the final frame. Malvern fell behind further, 41-29, at 5:11 from the end of the game before rallying somewhat to narrow the deficit to 41-33. At this time, 3:15, their chief threat, Jim Montella, twisted his right knee and had to leave the floor. Without him the Hornets were lost and the Rockets had clear soaring the rest of the way. A tight defense by the Rockets kept their adversaries from getting any close shots and as a result the Hornets sank just 12 of 42 floor flings for a cold 28 percent. They were 12 of 20 from the foul lines. The Rockets, perhaps taking Malvern too lightly, rimmed 22 of 62 action attempts for 35 pecent and dropped in 7 of 13 charities. Rebounds favored the Rockets, 28-26, after Malvern held a distinct edge for 3 quarters. Jim Monigold and Neil Tope each canned 14 points to top Errol Jacobs' Rockets. Montella took game honors, meshing 15. But, he was limited to 5 free throws after intermission. Montella also led both teams in rebounding snaring 10. Monigold had 7 and teammates Ken Beamer and Jim Sell 6 each.
