NEW PHILADELPHIA - Garaway (17-4) shook off the loss of "quarterback" Jim Young because of blood poisoning in his leg as a result of a blister on his foot to edge Tuscarawas Valley (5-15) in a thriller.  And you an toss in 3 techical fouls oncoaches for good measure!  TV gave Garaway a real test until under 3 minutes were left on the clock when the Pirates pumped in 6 straight points to break a 44-44 tie and take a 49-44 lead by 1:07.  Harold Swinford, the Trojans' 6-5 center, sprained his ankle at that time which dealt them a severe blow.  Pirate Dan Andreas, limited to 2 rebounds by Swinford and Bob Burris until this time, controlled the boards the rest of the way, snaring 4.  Great depth saved the Glen Bower-coached Pirates, although they dearly missed playmaker Young and tough Miller.  Tusky Valley led by as much as 7 points at different times, including 7-0, 21-14 (2nd quarter) and 23-16.  But the Pirates had too much talent.  With Young and Miller out, Ron Raber took up most of the slack with 18 points and pulled in 6 rebounds.  Andreas and Terry Gerber both got 11.  The Trojans were paced by Bob Burris who garnered 19 markers and Swinford with 10.  But the Pirates tightened their defense and limited Burris to 4 free throws after intermission.  Ken Gold's Trojans held the upper hand throughout the 1st half and were in the driver's seat until Don Richardson stole the ball from   Swinford and raced the length of the court for a layup which gave Garaway its 1st lead, 31-30, at 4:52 of the 3rd canto.  It was back and forth for a while and the Pirates held a 37-35 lead going into the last period.  Working better now, Garaway took a 42-37 margin and appeared ready to make its move.  But, Swinford sank both ends of a one-and-one situation and then another foul when Bower was saddled with a technical to cut the deficit to 42-40 by 5:42.  Bower had been tagged earlier, at 3:19 of the 3rd, when he thought his lads weren't getting a fair shake.  Burris dropped in a pair of fouls after one by Gerber and then Fred Clugston sank a goal to put the Trojans back on top, 44-43, with 3:27 remaining.  Then came Garaway's spurt and the game was all but over.  For the night, the Pirates drilled in 21 of 56 floor flings for 37 percent and 11 of 21 fouls.  The Trojans were 14 of 44 for 31 percent and 18 of 25, respectively.
