NEW PHILADELPHIA - The most exciting night of basketball in Tuscarawas County's history. Twenty-seven-hundread fans who squeezed into New Philadelplhia High Gymnasium last night for the finals of the Class A Sectional Tournament will support this statement. Tension started to build at 7, a half hour before the opening game, when it was learned both officials were delayed because of the weather. It didn't subside until 4 hours and 45 minutes later and the books showing Conotton Valley besting Dennison St. Mary 62-61 in triple overtime and Dennison overcoming Garaway although trailing nearly all the way. Conotton Valley and Dennison thus will represent this area in District action at Steubenville Thursday. The Rockets take on Warren Consolidated and the Railroaders battle Mingo Junction in the nightcap. Jerry Millburn, another hero of the night, playing an all-around fine game to spark the Railroaders. Personal fouls again played a big part in this struggle. Glenn Bower's Pirates lost the services of 6-4 Dan Andreas with 2:17 remaining in the final frame and Dennison ahead 46-45 after he sat out the last half of the 3rd canto with 4. Garaway already was weakened by the loss of "quarterback" Jim Young because of blood poisoning in his leg caused by a blister on his foot. A 5-9 Junior, Young saw spot duty in the 2nd half, but couldn't maneuver properly and was unable to direct the attack in his usual manner.
Both teams made their 1st shots, Pirate Terry Gerber drilling in a 17-footer from the center and Railroader Greg Goodrich hitting from the same distance off the side. Garaway (17-5), sparked by Senior Randy Miller's 3 goals, then spurted to a 9-2 margin and held a 22-13 advantage midway through the 2nd stanza. But Tom Connor's smooth-working Railroaders (13-8) refused to worry and continued to play their own game, moving the ball well and waiting for the good shots. The strategy paid off and with a blanced attack, Dennison caught fire and tied the count 22-22 at 1:51 when Dean Green dropped in a pair of foul shots. Bower's boys held on; however, and led 27-26 at the outset of the 3rd quarter at which time they tossed in 6 consecutive markers for a 33-26 margin by 5:13. Going into the final frame Garaway was on top 39-34. Millburn, who sparked the Railroaders great last quarter surge with 10 points, tossed in a goal and Jim Povick then tied the count for the 3rd and last time, 40-40.
It wasn't until 3:23 that Dennison took its 1st lead...one it never relinquished... when Goodrich pumped in an 11-footer from the side of the key. Following a Pirate turnover, Millburn sank the 2nd part of a 2-shot foul to make it Dennison 47, Garaway 45. Miller, a 6-3 Senior who "carried" the Pirates on his broad shoulders, especially in the 2nd half, was off target this time and Povick rebounded. The clock showed 1:56. Dennison employed "stalling" tactics and Goodrich sank a pair of fouls when he was fouled by Young at 1:09. Hurrying a bit too much, Miller again failed to find the nets and Millburn grabbed the important rebound. A few seconds later, at 0:56, the hustler, who joined the team late in January, popped in another foul for a 50-45 lead. Pirate Don Richardson came through with his 1st points of the night to cut the deficit to 3 points, 50-47. Green then missed what looked like a sure shot and Miller regained the range to pull the never-say-die Pirates to within a single point, 50-49, with 9 seconds remaining. His shot bounced high off the rim, hit the backboard and fell through the nets. Taking the ball out of bounds, the Railroaders worked up court and Povick found Millburn all alone under the basket. Millburn tossed the ball up and in as the buzzer sounded.
Millburn ended as Dennison's top scorer with 19 points and led the way in rebounds with 15. Povick contributed 13 tallies and Green 10. High scorer for the Pirates was Miller who netted 24. He had 6 rebounds, one less than Andreas who got all of his in the 1st frame. Dennison fired in 20 of 48 action attempts for 42 percent and sank 12 of 18 fouls. Garaway was 18 for 39 from the floor for 46 percent and 13 of 17 at the free throw lines. Rebounds favored Dennison 29-21. Both clubs committed 11 turnovers.
