65 - Dennison St. Mary Slams Tuscarawas 68-40 (2-19-65)

NEW PHILADELPHIA - Dennison St. Mary (14-4) outclassed Tuscarawas (8-12) in the tournament twin bill's opener.  St. Mary had little difficulty in achieving its victory over an out-manned Tuscarawas aggregation.  The Blue Waves all but sealed off the percentage shot area against the Broncos.  With a sizeable height disadvantage facing them, the Broncos were forced to go to the outside and simply didn't have the long-range artillery.  Many of their close-in efforts were batted away by Blue Wave defenders.  The game was deadlocked briefly 2-2 with 5:40 remaining in the opening stanza.  Ralph Douglass netted a jumper from the side and St. Mary was off with the tide.  It hiked its margin to 11-2 and ended the period on top 16-6.  At one time in the final quarter Coach Paul Drotovick's crew held a 54-24 lead.  Satisfied with the workout, Drotovick began substituting with 4:32 remaining to play.  Douglass and 6-5 Freshman pivot man, Tom Crosswhite, popped in 19 points apieced to pace the Blue Wave barrage.  Dave Fox added 13.  Rich Eckhardt was top man for Tuscarawas on 12 points.  St. Mary is making its tourney debut.  The Waves blazed the nets for a 43.1 percent mark from the field, swishing 28 of 65 efforts.  They added 12 of 19 free throws for 63.2 percent.  Meanwhile, Tusky was in miserable straits, counting only 16 baskets in 67 tries for 23.9 percent.  The Broncos made good on 8 of 17 charity opportunities for 47.1 percent.
