STEUBENVILLE - Dennison and Conotton Valley, co-winners of the New Philadelphia Class A Sectional Basketball Tournament, will  lock horns here Saturday.  At stake is the Championship of the District event and the ticket to go on to Regional play at Canton.  Last night, Dennison dropped Mingo Junction 58-48 and Conotton Valley worn down Warren Consolidated of Tiltonsville 67-60.  Three thousand fans saw last night's engagements in Diocesan Arena.

Tremendous foul shooting, 22 of 25, was the keynote of Dennison's victory.  Outgoaled by one, 19-18, the Railroaders (14-8) acted like they had nerves of steel, sinking 16 consecutive charity tosses after intermission.  All 3 misses came in the 1st half.  Dennison, playing it own game at all times, overcame a rash  of personal fouls on  its players early to hang on for the important win.  Both Jim Povick and Dave Bridgeman were saddled with 3 personals mid-way through the 2nd stanza, picked up 4 halfway through the 3rd and went to the bench for good late in the same period.  Dean  Green picked up 2 within a minute in the 3rd quarter and had 4 by 5:59 of that frame and Jerry Millburn was whistled for 2 quick ones in the 3rd canto after having just one the entire 1st half.  Mingo Junction jumped out to a 6-0 lead as Dennison committed 3 turnovers.  Green finally broke the ice for Tom Connor's crew at 5:20 when he split the nets from the corner.  Green hit 3 of 4 action shots in the 1st frame and helped pull the Railroaders to within one point, 8-7, at which time Greg Goodrich got his 1st points to put the Tuscarawas Countians on top 9-8.  Dennison actually scored 11 consecutive points in this stretch to take a 15-8 lead by the end of the 1st frame.  Although they missed 7 straight fouls in the 2nd stanza, the Indians managed to outscore Dennison 9-7 so the Railroaders held a 22-17 margin at the half.

With personals forcing the Railroaders to ease off a bit, Mingo was able to put on the pressure in  the 3rd canto and went in front 32-31 with 29 seconds remaining when Gene Evans tossed in a rebound.  Bridgeman tied the count with 8 seconds left, but Dave Stromp drilled in a 13-footer from the side of the key at the buzzer to  put Mingo ahead 34-32 going into the final frame.  After the Indians popped in 2 more goals to start the last 8 minutes, theRailroaders began playing like their old selves and pulled even at 40-40 when Green dropped  in  a foul.  Millburn dumped in both ends of a one-and-one situation at 4:27 to put Dennison on top 42-40.  Ted Duncan rimmed a goal off a drive to tie it 42-42,  but the Railroaders went on top for keeps when Green sank a pair of fouls at 3:36.  Green popped in 2 more charities to make it 46-42 and after a goal by Indian George Taylor, George Dryden dropped in 2 fouls and Goodrich a goal to make it 50-44 by 1:09.  That all but sewed it up.  Dennison took 42 shots, making 43 percent.  Mingo fired away 60 times, a 32 percentage.  Rebounds favored the Railroaders, 27-21, Millburn and Green both grabbing 8, Bridgeman 6 and Povick 5.  Nineteen personals were called against Mingo and 17 against Dennison.
