65 - Gnaden Blanks Midvale 2-0 (4-20-65)

They were quite yesterday with not one of this group of Gnadenhutten's first 4 batsmen counting a hit against Midvale.  But Terry Huebner, Gene Bates, Roy Williams and Gary Rice will have another opportunity to show their prowess next Monday when the Indians meet Newcomerstown in the Eastern Ohio Sectional class A Baseball Tournament.

Playing a game of pepper before yesterday afternoon's game with Gnadenhutten were Midvale infielders Junior Evans, Tom Daniels and Dan Kohler.

SUGARCREEK - Gnadenhutten (7-1) advanced to the next plateau in Eastern Ohio Class A Sectional Baseball Tournament warfare.  Southpaw Bill Kohl (3-0) fashioned a nifty 3-hitter as the Tribe blanked Midvale (1-2).  At the same time the Indians were limited to 2 hits, one the infield scratch variety, by Blue Devil hurler Eugene Belba (1-1).

In defeating Midvale, Gnadenhutten plated both its runs in the 1st frame, with 3 Blue Devil errors contributing to the Tribe's cause.  Leadoff batter Terry Huebner reached base on Tom Daniels' miscue, advanced to 2nd when  Blue Devil 3rd baseman Harvey Byers mishandled Gene Bates' grounder and scored when Belba threw in the dirt past Byers.  Shortly afterwqard, Bates was picked off on  a run down at 3rd base from  catcher Bob Anderson to Byers.  But Roy Williams, who went  to 1st on  a fielder's choice, romped the remainder of the distance to score on Brice Miller's line drive double to left field.  Miller, in the 4th inning, was credited with Gnadenhutten's other hit when he beat out a slow roller he hit to Tom Daniels.  But, that was the extent of the Indians' offensive.  From the 1st inning they had to rely on Kohl's slants.  He responded by firing strikeout pitches pas 14 Blue Devil batsmen, while walking only 2.

Belba, nearly as effective, didn't walk a man and struck out 7.  Midvale had a man as far as 3rd base only once, that in the 1st frame when Ted Tolotti reached base on an error by Tribe 3rd baseman Roy Williams.  Ted Tolotti stole 2nd and went to 3rd on a fielder's choice.  Dave Reichman counted the only extra base hit off Kohl, doubling in the 6th inning with 2 outs.
