65 - Newcomerstown Breaks County Records In Win Against Dover St. Joseph's 136-104 (2-6-65)

NEWCOMERSTOWN - You had to see it to believe it!  Records were a dime a dozen here Saturday night as Newcomerstown (3-11) and Dover St. Joseph's (4-11) hooked up in a run-and-shoot 'em contest.  The final tabulation showed the Trojans with 136 points and the Ramblers with 104.  John Hurst put the biggest mark in the record ledger, burning the nets for 58 points...a school and Tuscarawas County record.  The previous high was 53 points by Elmer Harris of Mineral City in 1929 and tied by Dick Gerber of Baltic in 1962.  Hurst sank 21 of 43 field goals and 16 of 20 fouls.  The 136 points is a Newcomerstown team mark, breaking the previous one of 93 against...you guessed it...Dover St. Joseph's in 1963.  The previous best individual mark for a Trojan was 49 by Pete Hewett in 1951.  The 136 points also gives Newcomerstown the County team mark, since the previous best was 123 by Baltic over Dundee in 1956.  And, the 2-club total of 240 markers is believed to be the top number of points scored in a single game.  In all probability, some sort of a personal foul mark also was established as 41 were called against the Ramblers and 31 against the Trojans.  All told, 5 Ramblers, including 4 starters, left the game via the personal foul route.  Four Trojans went the same way.  Newcomerstown fired away at the nets 96 times, making 45, St. Joseph's was 37 for 87.  In charities, the Trojans were 46 of 87 and the Ramblers 30 of 58.

Backing up Hurst in the scoring department for the Trojans of Coach John Haugh were Randy Osler with 23 points, Bernie Craigo with 22 and Larry Heller and Clyde Butler with 10 each.  Art Teynor's Ramblers were led by Denny and John Capozella with 25 and 22, respectively.  Jeff Lammers and Mickey McCracken got 14 each and Al Antonelli 10.  McCracken got all of his tallies in the 1st half before fouling out early in the 3rd canto.  The Capozella brothers were the only Rambler starters still around at the final buzzer.  Newcomerstown led 36-22, 68-49 and 102-76 at the stops.  St. Joseph's hosts tough Guernsey Catholi Friday night in its season finale.  Newcomerstown hosts Dennison the same night.  In the Reserve game, Newcomerstown came up the winner by downing Dover St. Joseph's 57-46.
