65 - Hiland Blanks Garaway 6-0 (4-28-65)
SUGARCREEK - The other game at Sugarcreek's Community Park had Holmes County's Hiland shutting out Garaway (2-1). Pitching, the experts say, is the key to successful baseball. Strasburg and Hiland had exactly that yesterday afternoon at Sugarcreek's Community Park. Don Yutzy whitewashed Garaway by limiting the Pirates to 4 scattered hits, fanned 12 and walked only 2. Pitcher Yutzy led the way to Hiland's 1st run when he slammed a triple into the leftfield corner off Garaway pitcher Dan Andreas (1-1). He scored a short time later when Devon Stutzman singled to center. Hiland added another marker in the 3rd when Carl Swartzentruber led off the inning by walking, stole 2nd and scored on a single by Joe Wengerd. The Hawks wrapped up their offensive effort in the 5th when they plated 4 runs. Andreas was tagged for singles by Art Miller and Galen Swartzentruber and issued free passes to Wegerd and Yutzy before being lifted in favor of Jim Pope (0-0). John Hochstetler, the 1st man to face Pope, singled sharply to center, driving in Galen Swartzentruber and Yutzy. Previously Swartzentruber's hit scored Miller and Wengerd. Pope held the Hawks the remaining distance. He permitted one hit and struck out one, while walking none. During his stint, Andreas permitted 6 hits, struck out 2 and walked 2.
