65 - Down The Line With Dan Kopp

DOVER - Belated pats on the back to Coach of the Year Charles Huggins of Stone Creek, Player of the Year Dan Andreas of Garaway.  They were in the spotlight Saturday when the Eastern District All-Star Basketball Squad was announced.  Also to those who were named to the 2nd club or received honorable mention.  Speaking of Huggins, it will be interesting to learn what he'll be doing next year.  Stone Creek merges with New Philadelphia and Huggins undoubtedly will be offered some type of position with the Quakers.  At least 2 county schools also are rumored to be after his services.  Andy Ahijevych, the former Hiland High standout, was 5th in scoring for  Ohio State this past season with an average of 9.3 points per contest.  "Andy A" hit on .529 percent of his field goal tries and was .743 from the foul lines.  He'll be back next fall.  Joe LaScola, ex-Dover St. Joseph coach, has been named Coach of the Year in the Detroit Catholic League.  LaScola, 31, piloted Holy Redeemer to its 2nd basketball league title in 5 years and has an over-all mark of 91-27.  His 1960 aggregation won the State Crown.  Congratulations also are in order for Dennison in view of its fine showing and to Conotton Valley, Eastern District Champion.  Dennison was coached by former Doverite Tom Connor, while the Rocket boss is ex-Baltic star Errol Jacobs.  John Peters, who played his schoolboy basketball for Strasburg, was one of 2 Freshmen receiving letters at Otterbein College this season.  Former Dover St. Joseph athlete Dick Bassetti, a Sophomore,  is  among the returnees for baseball action at  Muskingum College.  He is an outfielder.
