65 - Stone Creek Breaks School Record With Win At Newcomerstown 78-54 (2-13-65)
NEWCOMERSTOWN - Stone Creek's current crop of basketballers put their names in the record books here Saturday night with a surprisingly easy victory over Newcomerstown. With the win, the talented Panthers end regular season play with a gleaming 17-3 slate for the best mark in the school's history. According to The Daily Reporter morgue, the previous best Panther ledger was 18-5 in 1956-57. Coach Charlie Huggins' fighting crew lost only to Midvale, 55-47, Garaway 43-42 and Strasburg, 64-56. Neither loss is anything to be ashamed of for all 3 conquerers have fine teams themselves. Precision offensive work again was the keynote for the hustling Panthers who fought back from an 18-15 first period deficit to lead at the other rests, 33-30 and 54-41. Working methodically for the good shot as they have since Huggins took hold of the lead rein last season, the Panthers connected on 25 of 52 action shots for a fine 48 percent mark. They sank 28 of 38 charities. Newcomerstown, harried by the relentless Panther defense, hit on just 17 of 61 floor flings for a cold 28 percent and fired in 20 of 38 fouls. Balance again was the keynote of the Panther attack. John Bihari paced the scoring derby with 17 points, but John Flinner and Vic Turner were close behind with 14 and 13, respectively. The others in the lineup did their share, too. Trojan John Hurst, the county's top scorer, popped in 21 points for game honors and teammate Larry Heller had 15. Newcomerstown's Craig Wilken topped the rebounders, snaring 13. In the Reserve game, Newcomerstown just got by Stone Creek (11-4) 50-49.
