65 - Strasburg Romps Over Dover St. Joseph's 13-1 (4-28-65)

The bats of St. Joseph's strongmen, Pat Antonelli, Mickey McCracken, Steve Bazzoli and Rich Weaver were silenced yesterday.  Playing in the Eastern District Class A Sectional Baseball Tournament at Sugarcreek, the Ramblers were defeated 13-1 by Strasburg.

SUGARCREEK - Eastern District's Class A Sectional Baseball Tournament was sliced to 4 teams yesterday afternoon to set the stage for next Monday's semifinal activity at Gnadenhutten.  At Sugarcreek's Community Park, Strasburg (2-0) romped to a 13-1 victory over Dover St. Joseph's.  Bob Mills (2-0) turned in a nifty 5-inning one-hitter, giving way to Ron Lab (0-0) for the final 2 frames.  Mills struck out 8 and walked 3.  Control trouble in the 5th inning spoiled Mills' stab at a shutout.  After hitting Jim Doutt with a pitched ball, Mills yielded St. Joseph's lone hit, a solid single to right field by Dan Mattevi.  Two batters later, Mills walked John Tecco to fill the bases.  Rich Weaver then worked the Tiger fire-baller to a 3 and 2 count before getting a free pass, forcing in Doutt.  At the same time Bengal batsmen were having difficulty solving the curve ball slants of Rambler pitcher Mickey McCracken, but still piled up runs.  Before being relieved by Frank Pace at the beginning of the 6th inning, McCracken yielded 4 hits, one of them a double by Lab, struck out 5 and walked 6.  Pace was touched for 2 hits, including a 2-bagger by Terry Hess, fanned one and didn't issue a walk.  McCracken pitched 9 straight balls at the outset of the game.  He walked the first 3 men to face him.  Both Tom Dreher and Dave Keller scored as the result of miscues by Antonelli.  Keller came home when Antonelli over threw 1st base on a grounder by Lab, and Dreher touched the plate shortly after the Rambler 3rd sacker mishandled a pickoff throw from catcher Steve Bazzoli.  After plating one run in the 3rd and 2 in the 4th, Strasburg scored 7 insurance runs in a big 5th frame in which Dreher and John Studer counted singles and Lab a double.
