65 - Garaway Brings Down Midvale 63-47 (2-5-65)
SUGARCREEK - Perfection-plus Pirates (6-1) (11-4): that's what they were to Garaway High fandom last night as their favorites ran roughshod over Midvale (6-1) (15-2), here-to-fore this season an invincible power in the county's A ranks. Parlaying hoop-tight defensive play and an offense that whipped through Midvale's press with amazing agility, the Pirates chalked up the punchy 16-point verdict over the Devils. The last time a Garaway team emerged on the winning side of a game with Midvale was in the 1961-62 campaign when a Glenn Bower-coached quintet measured the Blue Devils on their court 53-47 January 26. And the last time Midvale had been so soundly whipped was just a year ago when Strasburg took a 76-58 nod January 10.
Sporting a 4-pronged scoring attack and outstanding defensive-efforts by Dex Sedwick and Ron Raber, Garaway was never behind in the contest. The Pirates moved to a 15-9 lead late in the 1st period at which time Midvale closed the gap to 4 points on a steal and ensuing basket. With Dan Andreas hitting 3 fielders and Sedwick 2, Garaway moved to a 29-18 halftime margin. Sedwick was one of the major factors in Garaway's 1st half performance as he scored 10 points, while limiting Midvale ace Dan Kohler to just 6. At the same time Raber was blanking Terry Leggett and held him scoreless until late in the 2nd half. In the 3rd stanza Garaway continued to race through the Blue Devil press for easy layups and added to the invaders woes by putting an effective fast break into motion. Entering the last canto the Pirates held a 45-27 lead, one they increased to 22 points in the next 2 minutes of action. Up to this point Kohler, who topped the Devils with 17 points, had only 9 markers and Leggett was still scoreless. In the final 6 minutes play on both sides got a little ragged and Midvale cut Garaway's lead to 13 points before the issue was settled.
Bower, commenting on the important victory, noted it was a tremendous defensive effort that turned the trick. "I think Raber and Sedwick played the best ball they have ever played in their lives," the Pirate mentor commented. Not withstanding was the 21-point performance by Pirate mainstay Andreas. Sedwick followed with 15, while the Pirates' sparkplug guard, Jim Young, added 14 and Raber 11. Leggett followed Kohler in the Blue Devil scoring column with 10 points. As a result of Garaway's superb defensive effort Midvale counted only 16 successful floor shots in 66 tries for 24.3 percent. The Blue Devils hit on 15 of 20 free throws. At the same time, Garaway was meshing 20 of 53 floor shots for 37.7 percent and added 23 of 29 charity tosses. Tonight, Garaway seeks to maintain its momentum when it entertains Coshocton County to battle Three Rivers. The Midvale Reserves (9-5) had won the earlier game with the Garaway Reserves (7-6) by a score of 32-26.
