65 - Junior High Basketball Tournament





PHOTO:  GARAWAY'S 1965 CHAMPIONS.  Garaway's 7th-8th Grade cagers won "all the marbles" in the county this season.  They won the League with a 6-2 slate and Saturday copped the Junior High Tournament at Bolivar by downing Port Washington 49-30.  Their over-all slate was 15-2.  Members of the team are:  SITTING - Manager Stan Gerber (left), Mike Henry, Rodney Fender, Tim Miller, Dan Banks, Kim Sedwick, Gordon Immel and Manager Dave Stein.  STANDING - Coach Sam McLean (left), Ken Snyder, Richard Yoder, Jim Williams,  Eric Maust, Dan Burkey, Mike Miller and Larry Harding.  Tim Miller had 18 points against Port Washington, Sedwick 15 and Fender 13.  Jeff Huston got 18 for the Purple Riders who trailed 10-4, 18-15 and 34-24 at the stops.

PORT NIPS GNADEN IN TOURNEY CLASH 2-11-65.  BOLIVAR - Port Washington, paced by Jeff Huston's 12 points, nipped Gnadenhutten 25-24 here yesterday in the Tuscarawas County Junior High Basketball Tournament.  D. Rich had 9 markers for Gnadenhutten which led 5-1 and 12-9 at the 1st two stops.  The young Purple Riders went on top 19-17 after 3 periods.  There will be 4 games Saturday.

JUNIOR HIGH TOURNEY CONTINUES 2-15-65.  BOLIVAR - Tuscarawas County Junior High Tournament action here Saturday found:  Port Washington rocking Midvale 52-36, Baltic edging Strasburg 34-32, Garaway whipping Tuscarawas 41-30 and Tuscarawas Valley socking Stone Creek 46-31.  Semifinals Wednesday will pit Baltic against Port Washington and Tuscarawas Valley Against Garaway.  Finals will be Saturday night.  Jeff Huston tossed in 25 points as Port Washington led 36-21 going into the final frame after an 18-18 halftime tie.  Midvale was on top 10-9 after one period of play. Morrison and Booth each netted 10 markers for Midvale.  Haswell of Strasburg and Miller of Baltic tied for game honors with 11 points apiece as Strasburg led 9-8, 14-10 and 25-24 at the quarter rests.  High for Garaway which led 10-3, 19-16 and 30-24 at the halts was Fender with 15 tallies.  McCauley of Tuscarawas got 17.  Menges of Tuscarawas Valley netted 14 and Stein of Stone Creek 12.  The young Trojans led 11-8, 19-14 and 33-23 at the stops.

PORT WASHINGTON VS. GARAWAY IN TOURNEY FINALE 2-19-65.  BOLIVAR - Port Washington and Garaway will fight it out here Saturday in the finals of the Bolivar Junior High Basketball Tournament.  The young Purple Riders whipped Baltic 61-29 and Garaway smacked Tuscarawas Valley 49-21 Wednesday to reach the championship test.  Jeff Huston netted 23 points to pace Port Washington which led 16-4, 31-9 and 43-19 at the stops.  Gerber got 13 for the Eagles.  High for Garaway was Tim Miller who notched 17.  Mingis had 10 for the Trojans who trailed 5-2, 19-9 and 27-14 at the rests.
