NEW PHILADELPHIA - Garaway High's Pirates (16-4) weighed anchor, set sail and scuttled third-seeded Stone Creek (17-4) off the tournament trail last night before a near-capacity audience in New Philadelphia Gymnasium. The headline attraction was the Garaway-Stone Creek pairing. It not only brought to a close the finest campaign in Stone Creek history, but ended one of the most glowing chapters in Tuscarawas County basketball annals. Stone Creek, tutored by last year's County Coach of the Year Charles Huggins, used a disciplined offense and strong defense in a race-horse era to achieve a 17 victory season. This fall the school becomes a part of the New Philadelphia system. As for Huggins, one of the most outstanding young coaches in the area, a future course has not been set. He indicated following last night's game his plans at this point are indefinite.
Stone Creek entered its game with Garaway riding the crest of a 6-game victory streak. But the Pirates have a 9-game skein of its own to protect and its tournament future at stake, was equal to the task. It put up a defense that harrassed the Panthers into cashing only 11 of 39 floor shots for 28.2 percent. The score was tied twice during the closely-fought contest, once at 2-2 and once at 15-15. And Stone Creek led once, 14-13, at the outset of the 3rd period when John Flinner drove for a lonesome layup following a steal from Pirate Jim Young. Garaway's Dan Andreas countered with a jump shot, Panther John Bihari swished a free throw, then Andreas slipped the knot by hitting a foul shot. From that point Garaway increased its lead to 21-15 and ended the 3rd period on top 26-21 before racing to a 30-21 advantage as the final stanza got underway. Sparked by Ron Raber's 11-point 4th quarter, Garaway sailed to victory. In leading the powerful Pirates, Raber received good scoring assistance from Andreas who got 13 points. Flinner set the pace for Stone Creek on 14 markers. When it was all over the quiet-spoken Huggins commented briefly, "We're very proud of them (Panthers) even though they lost here tonight. We thought that if we could get the lead we could make Garaway play our game, but...." Garaway Coach Glenn Bower also lauded the Panthers, saying, "They've got a real fine defensive team and really roots us out of our patterns. "The difference was having Andreas, Miller (Randy) and Raber around the boards, plus the fact that we got a little fast break going during the 2nd half." Bower went on to point out, "We're real proud of the fact that we held Stone Creek to 30 points (it's lowest point production of the season) because our players take great pride in their defense, too." The Pirate mentor had praise for all members of his team who saw action, naming Dex Sedwick, Young and Terry Gerber as other major cogs in the win. Garaway fired in 15 of 38 floor shots for 39.5 percent and added 15 of 21 charity tries for 71.4 percent. Stone Creek's foul-shooting percentage was 61.5 as it made 8 of 13.
