CANTON - Conotton Valley's tall, swift Rockets (22-2), first Harrison County team to advance to the Regional Class A Tournament in the post-World War II era, moved into the Regional Class A finals by sweeping aside Fairport Harbor (19-5), at the Canton Memorial Fieldhouse Friday night. Coach Errol Jacobs' Rockets working on a 14-game winning streak, go against West Salem Northwestern (22-1) in the championship game tonight. The winner advances to the State Tournament at St. John Area in Columbus next weekend. Northwestern defeated Windham, 60-46.
The victory was a no-pressure one for the Rockets, who stormed out to a 23-10 opening period lead and maintained command all the way. They held an overwhelming 39-20 halftime lead and moved into the final period comfortably in front, 50-34. Neil Tope stepped into the role of chief point maker for the Rockets by pouring in 25 points...11 field goals and three fouls. Ken Beamer scored 11 and Jim Monigold 10.
Mike Thomas, 6-3 Senior and son of Fairport Harbor coach, Russ Thomas, led the losers with 19 points. Conotton won the District Championship at the Steubenville Community Arena last Saturday night by rallying in the final period to sideline Dennison, 60-52.
