NEW PHILADELPHIA - Tuscarawas Valley (5-14) built up a big lead in the 2nd stanza and then held on to edge Newcomerstown (4-15). Big Harold Swinford, 6-5 and about 230 pounds, teamed with Bob Burris, 6-4, to spark TV over Newcomerstown. Swinford, hitting regularly from the baseline and key, pumped in 27 points and snared 18 rebounds. A pretty fair night's work. Burris was nearly as effective, rimming 24 points and grabbing 16 rebounds. John Hurst, the county's leading scorer, rammed in 24 points for Newcomerstown before fouling out with 1:18 left in the game and his team down 74-72. He had just 2 field goals and 3 free throws in the 1st half before his "guardian," Chuck Fishley, ran into foul trouble. Larry Heller had 14 points, Clyde Butler 13 and Craig Wilken 12 for the Newcomerstown cause. Tusky Valley rimmed 31 of 61 floor attempts for a sizzling 51 percent and sank 15 of 24 fouls. Newcomerstown made 26 of 76 from action for a cool 34 percent and dropped in 22 of 34 charities. After a see-saw struggle in the middle point of the 1st frame, the Tuscarawas Valley crew fell behind 15-12 at the initial stop before going on top early in the 2nd stanza and leading 38-27 by the half. Newcomerstown rallied for 8 consecutive points at the close of the 3rd canto and the 2 teams went into the last 8 minutes with TV in front 52-48. It was bucket for bucket in the final frame and the Newcomerstown lads kept pecking away and closed the gap to 2 points, 74-72, with 1:37 remaining. But then Swinford, who hadn't made a free throw in 3 tries up to now, dumped in a trio before John Smith popped in a goal with 26 seconds left for Newcomerstown.
