GNADENHUTTEN - The other game at Gnaden was Tuscarawas Valley (1-1) getting by Tuscarawas 2-3) for their first tournament win.  Gary Adams (1-1) hurled for Tuscarawas Valley fanning 9 and passing 7.  Dave Paisley took the loss, whiffing 12, walking 4 and hitting a batter.  In the Trojan 6th, Clugston walked, Ray Nist singled and Bill Johnson reached ona fielder's choice.  Two passed balls enabled 2 alert Trojans to scamper home.  Dan Burrier then singled to send in Johnson, Locker walked and Joe Duebner's long fly to left was dropped to allow 2 more runners to score.  The Broncos rallied  to score 3 runs in the final frame and had the bases full when Adams struck out Tom Johnson to preserve the victory.

65 - Gnaden Knocks Out Newcomerstown 9-2 (4-28-65)

Newcomerstown's Danny Berger, Rick Vierholler and Mickey McKibben discuss strategy prior to taking on Gnadenhutten.  The Indians; however, had the better strategy and won 9-2.

GNADENHUTTEN - At Gnadenhutten (8-1), the host Indians decisioned Newcomerstown.  Errors played a big part in Gnaden's win over Newcomerstown.  The Indians committed 3 errors, but the Trojans made several more.  In the 2nd frame, the Tribe iced the verdict with 4 runs; although, getting  just one hit...a double by Roy Williams.  Williams also had another double.  For the Tribe in the 2nd, 2 walks and 2 passed balls, a wild pitch, 3 errors, a good squeeze bunt by Dan Jinks and Roy Williams' double provided the big runs.  Danny Berger stroked a 2-base hit for Newcomerstown.  Jim Jinks (1-0) was the winning pitcher, fanning 5 and walking one.  VanDusen was the loser, striking out 3, passing 3 and hitting one batsman.

65 - Hiland Blanks Garaway 6-0 (4-28-65)

SUGARCREEK - The other game at Sugarcreek's Community Park had Holmes County's Hiland shutting out Garaway (2-1).  Pitching, the experts say, is the key to successful baseball.  Strasburg and Hiland had exactly that yesterday afternoon at Sugarcreek's Community Park.  Don Yutzy whitewashed Garaway by limiting the Pirates to 4 scattered hits, fanned 12 and walked only 2.  Pitcher Yutzy led the way to Hiland's 1st run when he slammed a triple into the leftfield corner off Garaway pitcher Dan Andreas (1-1).  He scored a short time later when Devon Stutzman singled to center.  Hiland added another marker in the 3rd when Carl Swartzentruber led off the inning by walking, stole 2nd and scored on a single by Joe Wengerd.  The Hawks wrapped up their offensive effort in the 5th when they plated 4 runs.  Andreas was tagged for singles by Art Miller and Galen Swartzentruber and issued free passes to Wegerd and Yutzy before being lifted in favor of Jim Pope (0-0).  John Hochstetler, the 1st man to face Pope, singled sharply to center, driving in Galen Swartzentruber and Yutzy.  Previously Swartzentruber's hit scored Miller and Wengerd.  Pope held the Hawks the remaining distance.  He permitted one hit and struck out one, while walking none.  During his stint, Andreas permitted 6 hits, struck out 2 and walked 2.

65 - Strasburg Romps Over Dover St. Joseph's 13-1 (4-28-65)

The bats of St. Joseph's strongmen, Pat Antonelli, Mickey McCracken, Steve Bazzoli and Rich Weaver were silenced yesterday.  Playing in the Eastern District Class A Sectional Baseball Tournament at Sugarcreek, the Ramblers were defeated 13-1 by Strasburg.

SUGARCREEK - Eastern District's Class A Sectional Baseball Tournament was sliced to 4 teams yesterday afternoon to set the stage for next Monday's semifinal activity at Gnadenhutten.  At Sugarcreek's Community Park, Strasburg (2-0) romped to a 13-1 victory over Dover St. Joseph's.  Bob Mills (2-0) turned in a nifty 5-inning one-hitter, giving way to Ron Lab (0-0) for the final 2 frames.  Mills struck out 8 and walked 3.  Control trouble in the 5th inning spoiled Mills' stab at a shutout.  After hitting Jim Doutt with a pitched ball, Mills yielded St. Joseph's lone hit, a solid single to right field by Dan Mattevi.  Two batters later, Mills walked John Tecco to fill the bases.  Rich Weaver then worked the Tiger fire-baller to a 3 and 2 count before getting a free pass, forcing in Doutt.  At the same time Bengal batsmen were having difficulty solving the curve ball slants of Rambler pitcher Mickey McCracken, but still piled up runs.  Before being relieved by Frank Pace at the beginning of the 6th inning, McCracken yielded 4 hits, one of them a double by Lab, struck out 5 and walked 6.  Pace was touched for 2 hits, including a 2-bagger by Terry Hess, fanned one and didn't issue a walk.  McCracken pitched 9 straight balls at the outset of the game.  He walked the first 3 men to face him.  Both Tom Dreher and Dave Keller scored as the result of miscues by Antonelli.  Keller came home when Antonelli over threw 1st base on a grounder by Lab, and Dreher touched the plate shortly after the Rambler 3rd sacker mishandled a pickoff throw from catcher Steve Bazzoli.  After plating one run in the 3rd and 2 in the 4th, Strasburg scored 7 insurance runs in a big 5th frame in which Dreher and John Studer counted singles and Lab a double.

65 - Garaway Tops Malvern In Slugfest 26-25 (4-21-65)

SUGARCREEK - Garaway's Dan Andreas looped a single into right centerfield and gave Malvern heartaches.  That's how yesterday's Eastern District Class A Sectional Baseball Tournament doubleheader at Sugarcreek stacked up.  And the stack of runs was piled high into what surely must have been record-breaking strata.  Down by 8 runs entering the bottom of the 7th inning, Garaway (2-0) scored 8 markers to "nip" Malvern.  Andreas' single and a combination of 2 Hornet errors with the bases loaded brought home the tieing and winning markers.

It took Garaway 3 hours and 15 minutes to defeat Malvern.  Starting  hurlers Dan Andreas (1-0) for the Pirates and Hornet Tom Orcutt long since had left the mound when the winning run was scored.  Andreas, who went to 1st base after pitching one inning and being charged with 10 Malvern runs, was succeeded first by Dave Pope (0-0) who worked two-thirds of an inning.  By far the most effective of Garaway's 4 pitchers was third man Randy Miller (0-0).  He permitted 2 runs on one hit in the 4th frame, blanked the Hornets in the 5th, but was tagged for 6 runs in the 6th before being relieved by Jim Young (1-0) at the outset of the seventh.  Young, although shelled by 8 Malvern tallies, emerged the winning hurler.  His seventh-inning opposite, Bill Monroe, was the loser.  He permitted Garaway's 9 last-inning runs, including the tieing and winning markers.  Prior to that, Fred Campbell saw brief action, walking the only 3 men to face him before he was replaced by Bob Evanich, who went 4 innings.

Garaway was behind by 8 runs twice, once at 12-4 in the 2nd inning and again at 25-17 entering the finale.  On the 2nd ocasion, Garaway knotted the count when Young, Andreas and Pope spearheaded the drive bny batting in 2 runs apiece as each singled in the 6-run 6th inning.  Included were walks to Bob Klein, Dave Andreas and Bob Malone.  Young, though no choosing of his own, was hit by a pitched ball to launch the final inning's drive.  Andreas reached base on an error by the pitcher, then Miller unloaded a towering 3-run Home Run (3) that carried 380 feet.  John Fankhouser, who should receive a purple heart for his yeoman performance in catching Garaway's wayward-throwing pitchers, was hit by a pitched ball and Dean Burky and Greg Trover walked to fill the bases.  Hornet Monroe continued to be unable to find the strike zone, walking Malone, Young and Klein.  The sacks were still filled with Pirates when Andreas connected for his single to send home 2 runs and end the game.  All told, Garaway contributed 9 errors to the Hornet cause.  At the same time, its pitchers were being tagged for 15 Malvern hits, while striking out 3 and walking 15.  Malvern's pitchers yielded 14 hits, fanned 7 and walked 13.

65 - Strasburg Slams Baltic 21-0 (4-21-65)

Strasburg's Bob Mills, who hurled one-hit ball for 5 innings against Baltic in the Class A Baseball Tournament Wednesday, shows teammates Ron Lab, Tom Dreher and Terry Hess his favorite grip.  Lab pitched the final 2 innings.  Dreher hit a 360-foot Home Run and Hess tripled in the 21-0 victory.

Opposing teams of Strasburg in the Class A Sectional Baseball Tournament will have these 5 batsmen to contend with.  All played key rolls in Wednesday's 21-0 romp over Baltic.  They are:  Don Gerber, who had 4 singles and John Studer, who had a 360-foot Home Run.  Photo also includes Rock VanFossen, who had a double, Dave Keller, who had 3 singles and Terry Spidell.

SUGARCREEK - Strasburg's Bob Mills (1-0) threw "aspirins" at Baltic (0-3) and gave the Eagles headaches.  Behind the one-hit pitching of Mills and Ron Lab, who went to the mound for the final 2 innings, Strasburg demolished undermanned Baltic.  In achieving its victory, Strasburg (1-0) picked on Baltic pitchers Ron Maurer (0-1) and Tim Richardson (0-0) for 22 hits.  Four of them were for extra bases.  John Studer counted a 360-foot circuit clout as one of his 4 hits.  Tom Dreher had a 4-bagger the same distance, while Terry Hess tripled in addition to his 2 singles and Rock VanFossen had a double.  A Home Run blast by Don Gerber that went past the 370-foot mark was nullified when he did not touch 2nd base.  Baltic alertly caught the miscue and Gerber's hit goes into the record books as a single.  Lab and Dave Keller backed up the Tiger attack with 3 singles apiece.  Hess and Dreher each were credited with 4 runs batted in and Keller, Lab and VanFossen with 3 each.

At the same time, Baltic batters were being held at bay by the bullet-like riflings of Mills.  Ron Maurer was the lone Eagle to hit Mills safely when he sent a screaming grounded past Tiger 2nd sacker Studer in the 2nd inning.  Mills, who at the outset had control difficulty throwing 7 straight balls, ended with 10 strikeouts and permitted one walk.  Coach Pete Angelo gave his ace a rest in the final 2 innings, switching him to shortstop.  Lab, whose tosses are a good measure slower, maintained the shutout by facing 7 men, striking out 4 and not walking any.  Maurer, charged with the loss, went 2 and one-third innings.  He permitted 9 runs, fanned one and walked none.  Richardson was tagged with the remaining Tiger runs, whiffed 2 and walked 3.

65 - Tuscarawas Bites Conotton Valley 2-1 (4-20-65)

This threesome provided a victorious combination for Tuscarawas in its 2-1 win over Conotton Valley.  Ben McGarry who scored both runs and Rich Schumacher, who drove in both runs, check the style used by pitcher Dave Paisley, who set the  Rockets down on 6 scattered hits.

SUGARCREEK - Tuscarawas (2-2) also emerged from a pair of tight pitching duels yesterday afternoon on the Indian diamond to advance to the next plateau in the Eastern Ohio Class A Sectional Baseball Tournament warfare.  Tusky had to go 8 innings before successive doubles by Ben McGarry and rich Schumacher snapped a 1-1 deadlock, giving the Broncos a decision over Conotton Valley.

Bronco pitcher Dave Paisley (2-0) was consistent in the fact that he showed outstanding ability in the clutch, as did his infield teammates who bailed him out of trouble with some outstanding playmaking.  Paisley pitched himself into and out of trouble 5 out of the 8 innings.  Conotton Valley counted its lone marker in  the 1st frame.  John Whitehair worked the Bronco hurler for a base on balls, went to 2nd on a stolen base and scored on an error by 1st baseman Andy Ronald.  Paisley walked the bases loaded in the 4th inning, but a pickoff play going from catcher Schumacher to 3rd baseman Ray McWilliams, a popper to 1st and a strikeout killed the Rocket bid.  Conotton Valley also had runners on base the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th innings, leaving 10 men stranded.

When it was over, Paisley had struck out 7 and walked 8.  Losing pitcher Jim Monigold fanned 7 and walked 2.  The Broncos scored the equalizing run in the 5th inning.  McGarry led off with an infield single, stole 2nd and scored when Schumacker lofted a soft single to right that just barely made  it over the glove of Rocket 2nd baseman Whitehair.  The same duo provided the Broncos their winning combination.  McGarry drilled a line drive double down the 3rd base line  andSchumacher followed with his big game-winning  hit to left.

65 - Gnaden Blanks Midvale 2-0 (4-20-65)

They were quite yesterday with not one of this group of Gnadenhutten's first 4 batsmen counting a hit against Midvale.  But Terry Huebner, Gene Bates, Roy Williams and Gary Rice will have another opportunity to show their prowess next Monday when the Indians meet Newcomerstown in the Eastern Ohio Sectional class A Baseball Tournament.

Playing a game of pepper before yesterday afternoon's game with Gnadenhutten were Midvale infielders Junior Evans, Tom Daniels and Dan Kohler.

SUGARCREEK - Gnadenhutten (7-1) advanced to the next plateau in Eastern Ohio Class A Sectional Baseball Tournament warfare.  Southpaw Bill Kohl (3-0) fashioned a nifty 3-hitter as the Tribe blanked Midvale (1-2).  At the same time the Indians were limited to 2 hits, one the infield scratch variety, by Blue Devil hurler Eugene Belba (1-1).

In defeating Midvale, Gnadenhutten plated both its runs in the 1st frame, with 3 Blue Devil errors contributing to the Tribe's cause.  Leadoff batter Terry Huebner reached base on Tom Daniels' miscue, advanced to 2nd when  Blue Devil 3rd baseman Harvey Byers mishandled Gene Bates' grounder and scored when Belba threw in the dirt past Byers.  Shortly afterwqard, Bates was picked off on  a run down at 3rd base from  catcher Bob Anderson to Byers.  But Roy Williams, who went  to 1st on  a fielder's choice, romped the remainder of the distance to score on Brice Miller's line drive double to left field.  Miller, in the 4th inning, was credited with Gnadenhutten's other hit when he beat out a slow roller he hit to Tom Daniels.  But, that was the extent of the Indians' offensive.  From the 1st inning they had to rely on Kohl's slants.  He responded by firing strikeout pitches pas 14 Blue Devil batsmen, while walking only 2.

Belba, nearly as effective, didn't walk a man and struck out 7.  Midvale had a man as far as 3rd base only once, that in the 1st frame when Ted Tolotti reached base on an error by Tribe 3rd baseman Roy Williams.  Ted Tolotti stole 2nd and went to 3rd on a fielder's choice.  Dave Reichman counted the only extra base hit off Kohl, doubling in the 6th inning with 2 outs.

65 - Gnaden Boys In Track Win (4-14-65)

In a race to the wire, Merle Mullet of Hiland narrowly defeats Francis Krantz of Gnadenhutten in the 220-year dash.

Hiland's Art Miller successfully surmounts the high jump bar at 5 feet 6 inches to chalk up one of 7 Hawk firsts.

Vic Turner of Stone Creek finishes far ahead of the field in winning the 440-year dash.

Mike Cohen of Gnadenhutten led the Tribe to victory in yesterday afternoon's quadrangular meet in New Philadelphia's Quaker Stadium.  He was the Indians' only double individual winner, placing 1st in both the half mile and mile runs.

NEW PHILADELPHIA - Depth proved the difference for Gnadenhutten High's track team yesterday afternoon in Quaker Stadium.  It was enough to offset a parade of 1st place finishes by Hiland and gave the Indians a 4-point edge over the Hawks in winning a quadrangular meet.  The four team results were:

Gnadenhutten Indians 48.5
Hiland Hawks 44.5
Port Washington Purple Riders 34
Stone Creek Panthers 21

Gnadenhutten, led by Mike Cohen's wins in the 880-yard and mile runs, garnered 3 less blue ribbons than Hiland, which finished with 7.  Ron Crites' top shot was added to a winning clocking in the mile relay, a team comprised of Dan Jinks, Bill Kadi and John and Ron Parrish.  But it was 4 seconds, 6 thirds and 3 fourths that enabled the Tribe to nip the Hawks.  Hiland, which is sponsoring a track team for the 1st time, had a pair of double individual winners in Merle Mullet and Ronny Troyer.  Mullet captured the 100 and 220-yard dashes and Troyer the low and high hurdle events.  Art Miller leaped 5 feet 8 inches in the broad jump for other Hawk firsts.  Rounding out Hiland's first-place effort was the winning 880-yard relay team comprised of Phillips, Mullet, Lyle Raber and Tom Mullet.  Vic Turner and John Feller won the 440-yard dash and discus, respectively, for Stone Creek, while Port Washington's Dan Gay captured the pole vault.
