66 - Malvern Clips Garaway 4-3 (4-26-66)
SUGARCREEK - Malvern edged Garaway (3-3-1) yesterday in Class A Sectional Baseball Tournament action. A strong wind and an interference call proved Garaway's downfall. It was a beautiful day throughout the game, but the wind suddenly came up and caused Garaway fielders to misplay a couple of high fly balls that dropped safely. Then the tie-breaking run came in the last of the final frame. Luther Smith started the inning by singling. The Speedster stole 2nd and 3rd and scored on a single by Glenn Clark. Clark stole 2nd and went to 3rd on an infield out. Then with Dave Earley at bat, Clark started home. Pirate catcher John Fankhauser took the pitch and tagged Clark who tried to knock the ball from Frankhauser's grip. Plate umpire Max Miller wasted no time in calling Clark safe; because, Fankhauser interferred with Earley who had squared away to bunt. And that was the ball game. Malvern took a 1-0 lead in the 3rd inning on a single by Bob Evanich, 2 walks and a single by Bucky Monroe. Garaway went on top in the 5th on a single (5) by Jim Young, a triple (1) by Greg Troyer and a bunt single by Dave Andreas (4). The Green Hornets tied the count in their half of the 5th on an error, stolen base and a high fly by Clark that dropped when it was blown by the wind. Garaway went back ahead in the 6th on 2 errors, then came the fateful seventh. Monroe was the winning pitcher, walking 3 and striking out 9. Dan Andreas (0-1) started for Garaway, Troyer (2-2) coming on in the 6th. The duo struck out 2 and walked 2. Troyer played an outstanding game at 3rd before taking over the mound chores.
