DOVER - The Dover Class A Sectional Tournament took place on Monday, February 21st with Hiland nipping Dennison St. Mary's 50-49 and Dover St. Joseph's blasting Newcomerstown 78-56.  On Tuesday, February 22nd, Conotton Valley beat Port Washington (score unknown) and Strasburg slammed Cadiz 62-34.  There are no stats for these games as they were missing from The Daily Reporter pages.

Tuscarawas Valley (6-13) displayed some fine outside shooting as it rapped Scio (5-13).  After a see-saw 1st quarter which ended with the Trojans holding a narrow 13-11 lead, the difference between the 2 teams steadily increased as it was 28-19 at the half and 43-30 going into the final frame.  It was an excellent showing by Bill Frye's Trojans...except for 23 turnovers.  Scio had nearly as much trouble retaining possession, losing the ball 20 times.  The officials called numerous traveling and 3-second violations,  in addition to the bad passes.  Still, Tuscarawas Valley is a much better ball club than it was at the start of the season.  Ray Nist was the spark for the Trojans last night, hustling his way for 18 points and fighting  for 12 rebounds.  Both figures were tops for the game; although, Nist shared point honors with Panther Sophomore Jim Allensworth.  The latter also was his team's leading rebounder, snaring 8.  He displayed a good touch with the ball.

Two other Trojans hit double figures, Tom Symons getting 14 points and Dave Clugston 13.  Dick  Harvey was close to the 2-digit mark,  hitting for 8.  The hustling and hard-working Trojans outrebounded Scio 40-25.  Neither team had a chance to try for a field goal when Nist put the scoreboard to work...at 7:46...from the foul line.  Panther Rick Taylor tied it at 7:10 and after ties of 5-5, 7-7 and 11-11, Nist hit from the top of the key to put the Trojans ahead for keeps.  Nist led the 1st quarter firing in 7 points.  Clugston took over as the sparkplug in the 2nd stanza, matching Nist's opening output.  The Trojans built their margin to 22-15 by 4:03 then, after Panther Paul Baker goaled, racked up 6 straight points to make it 28-17 by 1:53.

The Trojans, showing plenty of desire and determination, hiked their advantage to 32-21 at the outset of the 3rd stanza, then experienced a few anxious minutes as the Panthers cut that to 38-30 by 3:17.  But Symons goaled, Harvey hit on a foul and Clugston dropped a rebound through the nets before the quarter ended.  Scio went into a full-court press at the outset of the final frame, but the Trojans solved that and built their margin to 50-32 by 5:45.  From then on the 2 teams matched point for point.

For the night, Frye's lads hit on 23 of 58 action attempts for 39.6 percent, one of their better showing this season.  They were 13 of 22 from the foul lines.  Scio made 14 of 54 floor flings for a cold 25.9 percent and sank 15 of 21 charities.
